Title: Yet another Galaga Restoration (new pix 4-27-14)
Post by: Malenko on October 28, 2013, 09:47:08 am
A Galaga popped up on my local craigslist, for $100. Seller said that the "Machine powered on but would not play" , I thought he meant it played blind, so I asked if anything was on the screen, and he said yes but the game isnt playabe. I offered $75 thinking its some sort of wiring issue and he accepted. Called up my buddy Dan (cause Bobby is a wuss) and we went and picked it up Sunday morning.

Got the cab back to my house, and its pretty busted up but I can save it. The base is completely knocked out of the cab and being held "inside" the cab by the wiring. The lower back piece of wood is absent, and the back door was a piece of wood, put on with door hinges, and screwed shut :(
I turned it on and saw the Galaga diagnostics screen.  I drilled the lock to the coin door, flipped the test switch back over, and BAM! SHE PLAYS!

Here was my first Galaga Cab: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,129554.msg1325236.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,129554.msg1325236.html)

Here the run down, followed by pictures:

The Bad:
Base is destroyed (now fixed)
Back door was attached with door hinges drilled into the side :( (now fixed)
lower piece of wood missing (now fixed)
LOUD noise coming from monitor.
had to drill the lock (now fixed)
no side art  (now fixed)
no kick plate art (now fixed)
No leaf buttons, just regular pushbuttons (now fixed)
plexi over the CP ? (now fixed)
no rubber/plastic kick plate (now fixed)
MIDWAY bezel is painted over (now fixed)

The Good:
Its not a bootleg Galaga
Switching power supply conversion is already done
Monitor and game board WORK
Marquee, bezel, and CP are in pretty good shape
Coin Door is in good shape, and mechs work. (has been cleaned and rewired)

The pictures:
My two Galagas (well the one in the back is rewired for Jamma, and runs a 60 in 1)

For the record, I was busy Sunday morning.... So watch it bub.

Also, are you SURE you won't get into trouble with the Mrs. for having 2 Galagas? Just saying I can make room next to the KI2 cab

Laid the cab on its back, so I can start the minor body work. Put the new kickplate art on the front for fun:

The front is a lot more scratched than I thought it was:

First sanding done, not going to the bare wood this time:

Second Galaga Ive gotten that had a makeshift door put on with door hinges.

First round of patching:

Should get more sanding and body work done tonight, maybe.

Small update, the cab now has a bottom! I have the door cut but not the vents in the door or the key hole yet, so no pictures.

Here is whats left of the old base, next to the new base. Top of the new base has 3/4" strips ran along the top, glued and screwed into the base:

Held in place by tension:

Screwed in place:

And low bottom piece installed, the hole for the power cord is ROUGH but meh:

Still need to paint the back bottom piece , dont think there is a need to paint the base.  baby steps.

Finally got some time to work on this and update the thread.  Originally I did a quick patch job and painted but it just wasn't good enough, gotta do the cab as good as I can for my buddy Bobby.
So I re-prepped the sides, only took a picture of the one side:

Then comes the primer for the right side:

sanded, and round 2:

BOOSH! 3rd coat:

Yeah, slight roller marks, but the primer was still wet. After it dried I hand sanded it, I flipped the cab over and started the other side.  No prep or first primer pic, but heres primer coats 2 and 3:

Here is the left side, 4 coats of primer, and hand sanded:

Here is the right side, 4 coats of primer, and hand sanded:

First coat of paint on the left side and right side:
(http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=103207.0;attach=302177;image)(http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=103207.0;attach=302179;image)
It is a very thin coat, and after it dried I hand sanded it down and laid down another coat.
(http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=103207.0;attach=302181;image)(http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=103207.0;attach=302183;image)

That's all I got done in the last 2 days. Gotta call up arcadeshop finalize the order (tmolding & CP bolts), then Im on the hunt for leaf buttons for this, if they are a no go, I'll get micro-leafs instead. Tomorrow I need to hand sand it down again with high grit, and put at least 1 more coat of black on it. If the paints good, then front kick plate art gets applied. Then its up to Bobby to figure out what he wants to do for art on the CP and sides.

Ok, so final coat of paint is on:

Fixed all the internal wiring and this is how it looks:

And here is the old ball and chain applying the kickplate art:

And here is how she sits lays down:

Thanks. I finished cutting the doors and vents last night, off to pick up another midway cab tonight, so tomorrow I'm going to prime them and then put 2 or 3 coats of black on through out the week. I wont spend as much time with the finish, cause frankly its the back door lol.  I also bought some gutter guard to cut and cover the vents. in the back.

EDIT: It was a "Tekken 4" cab I was picking up....

Now I get to restore my MKII back to MKII from UMK3, and turn this back into an Ultimate MK3
Title: Re: Yet another Galaga Restoration

Decided to stop dicking around and finish up projects before starting more. So my MK3 and MK4 cabinet restorations are on hold while I finish up whats on my plate.

Got the back all squared away and cleaned up. Got new hex head screws for the plastic up top. There arent black, but they are hex/flat head combo
(http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=136713.0;attach=305888;image)

Close up here, Machine 9175:

Finished cleaning and rewiring the coin door, mechs, and lights. Added new coin door graphic as well:

The machine came with a piece of 1/8" plywood screwed intot he sides with door hinges, so I had to make a new door:
still needs the barrel lock installed.

Kick plate plastic installed, I had the cab on its back, so I could install the black leather texture tmolding.

And this is how she stands right now:

Only things left to do are replace the buttons with leafs from TheNasty, replace the CPO art, and add side art.  This cab is already sold to Bobby aka HoBoJoe and Im just waiting for him to buy the art.

it was a labor of love, I knew I wasnt keeping the cab the day I bought it. Almost all my projects are complete, just need to fix up my 2 MKs then I can get to work on having a MAME cab again.

You don't have any shots of the inside of the marquee area, behind the glass, do you?
