i cant for the love of god get my 8500 to give me component out. i just bought a 27" philips for my cab and i get nothing but wavy purple lines.
i made my own adapter and put the registry entry in.
ive tried a few 480p timings in powerstrip, but it doesnt seem to be working at all.
anyone get this working w/o buying a stupid $50 adapter from ATi ?

Is it an HDTV?
I have the adapter and I don't think you will get it to work. Mine worked but it was severely overscanned, and I gave up with Powerstrip.
You can search around here for the old threads on the topic. If you can tell me what settings to run to get a good picture, I'll rename my dog after you.

Wienerdog,
I thought ATI had a fix or partial fix for the overscanning issue in a driver update (not quite sure, but seems like I come across this awhile back),,,,anyway have you tried the "update/fix" or are you still having the problem with the update (just curious)?

Ya, unfortunately...
<quote>On most televisions, a border around the edge of the display will be obscured. This is referred to as overscan; it is a limitation of the television hardware being used. The size of this overscan area, typically 5%, will vary with each HDTV and between each resolution chosen.
For example, more overscanning may be noticeable with 1080i than 480i. The effect is minimized with 720p, therefore, if your HDTV supports 720p, it is recommended to use this mode.</quote>
Overscan is 5% on an HDTV. I'll see if I can find my pics.

Here are my images from back in the day...
Hey night, sorry I didn't reply back in July. I just saw your post asking me if I got the component working. I stopped shopping the monitor forum while I was on the project forum for the last couple months. I only have so many wise-cracks to go around, I have to keep myself in one spot.

Hey there. I know it's over a month since this topic was last discussed, but while searching for something else, I ran across this and thought I might be able to help. I have an HDTV, a Radeon 9600 Pro, and ATI's component adapter. I did get it working right off the bat, no problems except the expected overscan. Running the desktop in 640x432 was a slight compromise, but not very satisfying.
Then I discovered Powerstrip, as other's have mentioned. Now maybe I have missed it (I searched around to see if anyone else suggested it) but I'm surprised that no one mentioned using Powerstrip to display your desktop in 540p mode. When I discovered Powerstrip, I found a lot of information on the net on how to get your 640 x 480 desktop displayed in full, zero overscan, in 540 progressive scan. I set it up, and it was absolutely beautiful. On top of that, I was able to set up 720 x 480, 856 x 480 (perfect for widescreen), and 1772 x 1000 (1080i mode) with no overscan, and 1920 x 1080 with some inevitable overscan (but not much). The difference is ridiculous. For HTPC users, Powerstrip is as wonderful a piece of software as MAME itself. So I highly recommend digging around for the info on how to do this.
Apologies if anyone else covered this in the past. If anyone still cares about this thread and would like more help, I'll be happy to expand on my explination.

Here's the other thread about the ATI component out. It seems like there was something mentioned about the overscan thing but I haven't checked.

I have an HDTV, a Radeon 9600 Pro, and ATI's component adapter.
We are using standard definition TVs. The ATI component adapter was made to be used with an HDTV, so everything should have worked for you. That is a pretty nice setup. If you are using a standard definition TV, go with the arcade setting in the custom settings.
Credit goes to SuckerFish for tracking down the arcade setting.
