Title: Ms. Pac-Man, Dig Dug, and other tall games with groovymame
Post by: Tzakiel on October 15, 2013, 10:56:25 am
My groovymame is picking a resolution for these 288 line-tall games which is causing my TV to flip out and scroll wildly up and down. I'm not sure what it's picking because it's too scrambled / moving too much to see. Is there a way to tell groovymame to use a specific resolution for these games, rather than the auto one that my TV won't support? I read it's possible to use a 640x480i or some other sort of compromise for these tall games, even though it won't be native, but I can't seem to find instructions as to how to set up a specific resolution choice for a single game. I'm very happy with the auto settings for all other games - it looks great!

Looks like yours is a NTSC only TV.

In mame.ini, edit the following options:

monitor custom
crt_range0 15625-15750, 49.50-65.00, 2.000, 4.700, 8.000, 0.064, 0.192, 1.024, 0, 0, 192, 256, 448, 512

The remarked value is the highest number of lines GroovyMAME will use as progressive, above that it will use interlaced modes.

Thanks Calamity.  I will try that tonight. I should note donkey kong and some other vertical games work fine. I assume since DK is 256, it will still work in progressive as that is the upper limit set in the ini.

Happy to say this worked... thanks for the clear answer I obviously needed!

This has cropped up again, not sure why. I have the same fix in the ini file still but the old problem is back. I think the only thing I do differently now is I use magic resolutions to fix hyperspin not loading. Any ideas why this has come back?

Calamity - I was able to fix this by looking at the vmmaker ini and I found the custom monitor setting in there still had the "288" number in the line. I changed to 256, ran vmmaker again, rebooted, and now it's working again.  Thanks!
