By "Old Faithful" I mean my GTX 295 Co-Op edition:

This was the top-o-the line card for it's time. Paid I think $500 new quite a few years ago, and has served me well until recently. Trying to push 1080p resolution on some recent games is causing some overheating, and a resent BSOD screen this morning told me I should get something new, before I cause some permanent damage. I'd like to move this card into a Hyperspin build soon, and keep the new card in my main rig at home to enjoy some new games until I can build my racing cab.
I haven't been keeping up on all the recent news between Nvidia and AMD. I'd like to get a card that can run any new titles 1080p with high effects without breaking the bank. What my plan is to get one card for hopefully no more than $250-$350 for my one LCD rig for now, and if I build my racing cab with multiple LCDs in the next year or so, add a 2nd (or 3rd, who knows) twin of the same vintage to handle the extra overhead.
I was looking at a NVidia 700 series card with extra ram (also do a lot of video encoding on the main rig) and thought this was a good option:
EVGA 04G-P4-2768-KR

Everything else in the rig is already upgraded (3rd gen i5, 16GB ram, 1000W+ PSU, blah blah) so I'm curious if I should wait if some new cards are right around the corner, or if looking for a 4GB card is overkill for my plans. Also not sure if this would pose any issues on my racing cab plans, which will be a mix of old emulated and modern racers.
Any insight would be appreciated. If I can get similar performance cheaper, either with a lesser card or from AMD, let me know. IF I should wait I'd rather hold out and spend the $250+ on the latest generation.

AMD is currently in the beginning of a refresh cycle -- not really new chips but new cards based on a refresh of the old chips and renaming from 7xxx series to R7 xxx or R9 xxx. So there will probably be some decent deals on the 7xxx series cards as they sell of excess inventories. Tom's Hardware recently had an article about the first several cards in the new series that had some benchmarks etc. which might provide some insight ( http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-r9-280x-r9-270x-r7-260x,3635.html (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-r9-280x-r9-270x-r7-260x,3635.html) )
The R9 270x falls into the performance\price range you are looking at around $200 and performs about on par with the Nvidia 760 in many of the benches (which may see prices on them come down a bit to remain competitive ) but as long as the 7870 is available at lower pricing they are a better deal right now -- Like this MSI 2GB card for $150 after MIR including the 2 game bundle is a hard deal to beat ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127722 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127722) )

I have that exact card in my multi-cade and it's excellent (if you want a true bang for the buck).
