i am running mame 124 on my cabinets, and i recently upgraded from a 3ghz p4 pc to a 3.2ghz Phenom II X4 system, so i have a little more horsepower to work with. are there any must have games that i am missing by not upgrading to a more recent version of mame?
-
Cave games maybe? Ddp 2 bee storm? What do you like?
-
i'm into mostly classics, beat em ups and fighting games. but there may be other awesome games that i'm not aware of.
-
0.124 is from 23 Mar 2008
so there are over 5 years of improvement / additions / changes.
even just a few releases after the one you're using support for "Touki Denshou -Angel Eyes-" was added for example and that feels like it's been emulated forever now!
GameNexus Mame Review Touki Denshou Angel Eyes (1996 Tecmo) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FWNhD28c1I#ws)
There was also the Jackie Chan games
Dman4Life plays - M.A.M.E. - Jackie Chan's Fists of Fire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HD0dAvS9ZVE#)
or Shogun Warrors (not as good tho)
Shogun Warriors World MAME Gameplay video Snapshot -Rom name shogwarr- (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjjYjMVnsmY#)
Alien Challenge was one of IGS' first non-mahjong / puzzle games, and was popular in China at least
Alien Challenge Arcade [te lo paso con un credito] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21rlHd3qZEM#ws)
That's just looking at some fighting games.. there have of course been beat 'em ups added too, and many classic style games as well as numerous improvements to existing emulations..
Over the course of the most recent couple of MAME releases I've also made 'Fighters History' work properly (would previously glitch out on the final bosses)
I did do a state of the MAME/MESS project writeup for 2012, but there is no such thing for the other years ;-)

In terms of Beat 'em Ups..
Age of Heroes - Silkroad 2

B Rap Boys

and again various improvements to existing emulations like Knights of Valor Superheroes
Knights of Valour: Super Heroes Zhao full score prat1 (三國戰紀之風雲再起趙雲爆分1) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESqLNC2QNq4#ws)

Not to hijack severdheds question thread, but are there recommended processor speeds recommended for each version of Mame?

varies by game. No processor is fast enough to run all fully emulated games. Pacman might run on a 2ghz machine, but if you want to run ridge racer, you'll need a top of the line intel i5 or i7. Even with a flagship AMD, it still has slowdown in some parts.

The general advice is always 'the best intel you can afford'
different versions of MAME don't really have different exact 'requirements', there are only a few points where there is a noticeable overall speed-up or slow-down across the whole project. Individual drivers tend to slow down when we improve the emulation, that's gradual and ongoing, and of course actual requirements vary greatly across the project.
There are points in time where basic things have changed, eg. current versions aren't going to run in Win 9x at all, and if we go multi-channel sound (which needs to happen at some point) that requirement might jump to Win 7 because it's an absolute hardware specific mess on XP thanks to Microsoft, likewise you're not going to want to run anything from the last few years using low-end intel graphics because their drivers are typically so buggy they fail to even render the UI properly!
but questions like this have been answered thousands of times.
Let's try and make this more specific to the topic.. the Toaplan game Knuckle Bash (a beat 'em up) has higher requirements in modern versions than old versions.
In very old versions there was no sound at all, no sound chips even emulated and the video chip emulation was sketchy in places.
Slightly newer versions had some crude sample playing hack to play some of the game sounds (slightly slower)
More recently (definitely after 0.124) the video emulation was improved, much tidier code, trusted mixing / priorities (slightly slower again)
Then more recently still we added proper sound emulation, this involved emulating the V25+ encrypted sound CPU (running at 16mhz, just like the main CPU) and hooking up the YM2151 sound chips (again, slower)
Here is a video I made of that one 2 years ago when we fixed the sound
[MAME] Knuckle Bash (c)1993 Toaplan - with full sound emulation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQTfi1hwDjQ#)
Over the course of the years the performance requirement for that driver have probably gone up 3-4 times due to the improvements made. It should still be well within reach of any half-decent system by today's standard and is of course now emulated much, much better than it used to be. Of course improving the emulation of this game has no massive effect on anything outside the driver aside from maybe a nearly unmeasurable slowdown from better emulating previously missing V25 CPU features.
Some changes (eg. cycle accurate CPU cores) tend to have a wider impact, but typically that's only been done for a handful of older 8-bit CPUs anyway so again typically nothing that will make a decent system sweat due to the changes.
Every driver IS going to be slower than much older versions, because practically every driver has seen or been affected by one or more improvements over the years, but that's the unavoidable cost of progress.

This game alone makes it worth the upgrade ;D

You have convinced me to upgrade, I compiled mame 150 last night with the hi score, no nag patch and direct input support. Found a romset for 149 and figured out how to update them to 150. I didn't get to test it out yet, maybe this evening.
Thanks

while I can't really approve of the various patches you've applied to the source I should point out that I've offered 2 update packages since 0.150 to coincide with what I'd considered important bug fixes made since then.

Just thought I'd better mention it in case any of the bug-fixes are applicable to your needs. Rise of the Robots (mentioned in the fixes) is a fighter, but I didn't mention it in the above because a) It's a terrible game, b) It's a prototype so isn't even finished, and c) Performance requirements are very high.
if you don't want the UME (MAME+MESS) functionality these can easily be built with "TARGET=mame"
you can also always get the very latest code from the official SVN or semi-official GIT mirror, although there is always a chance that won't compile.
it's always worth keeping track of the latest progress to see if any changes that matter to you have been made. I try and do a bit of a write-up for each release.

awesome...thanks. i'll apply the updates this evening (if i get a chance). the final thing that made me want to upgrade was the support for vertical.ini and horizont.ini. i have a 16:9 display, i dont really mind the horizontal games stretched to fill the screen, but vertical games just look stupid like that. in the past i have manually tweaked ini files for all the vertical games on my favorites list, but that pretty much just sucks. i found a thread mentioning i could use vertical.ini to keep them from being stretched, but it didn't work with my old version of mame.
i can't wait to try this

If you have any gun games working right now you might reconsider updating to .150. I don't use gun games (yet, although I will in the future once I get my aimtrak installed). There is an issue with Area 51 for example. The video is very choppy and it's unplayable. It has to do with the jaguar.c driver. Read more here: http://www.epforums.org/showthread.php?87533-MAME-150-some-games-with-chd-s-have-no-video (http://www.epforums.org/showthread.php?87533-MAME-150-some-games-with-chd-s-have-no-video)
For now, everything else works great (except for those blasted muffled Donkey Kong sounds and terrible Mario Bros walking sounds). YMMV.

Thanks for the heads up...no guns on this cabinet so that shouldn't be an issue. I still have my mame 124 directory intact in case I run into an issue with 150.

and don't get me started on those horribly muffled DK sound effects, they drive me crazy.
-
I know you don't need more convincing but the improvements to ddragon alone were worth the upgrade to 150 I just did.

im hoping to be able to try out my 150 setup in the next day or so, my cab pc has been busy for days recording video snaps for the complete rom set...it takes a while. it is set to only record video for parent roms, im not sure how many parent roms there are, but it has recorded about 3000 so far.
