Title: Cheaper Mini Monitor for secondary display for Arcade?
Post by: markronz on October 09, 2013, 02:05:36 pm
I, like many of you, would love to have a second monitor for my marquee.   I've seen all the creative solutions people have made, and I've seen some new marquee sized monitors that cost tons of money.   I don't have the space to mount another full size monitor inside my cab, and I don't have the money to buy one of those other marquee sized monitors. So I've mostly given up on that dream for now.   But I'm not sure that I want to/have to give up on the second monitor idea as a whole.   My cabinet is just a normal sized two player machine with a 21" monitor.   I was thinking that it might be cool to have a smaller screen below the playable one, that could just display a simple picture.  I'm guessing it would use Marquee Magician to control it:

Maybe it would display the marquee, maybe a control card explaining what the buttons do, etc.  I'm not sure yet.

But my question is this.  Does anyone know of any small, mini, sized monitor options out there that could work for this?   Somewhere between 3 - 6 inches would probably be small enough.   Anyone know of anything that would work?

Like would just a little RCA monitor, such as this one work?

Can I convert a DVI monitor output from my video card to be RCA and still have the picture look good?  Just looking for suggestions like that on what monitors might work.   Of note, I do have a video card with dual DVI outputs, so I do have a DVI out available for use.

I don't know about good....but using a converter will work to display the image. I imagine finding an DVI to RCA converter would be hard. But you could get an HDMI to RCA really easily and cheap. Just need a cable that is DVI to HDMI. Since those are both digital signals you don't need an active converter.

Yeah but then I would need to find a monitor with a HDMI in.   Unlike the cheapo I linked.

Yeah I think I might just pick up one of those USB MIMO monitors instead since those have come down quite a bit in price since I last looked.

There are numerous affordable rear view long displays being sold on ebay right now that could possibly be used for such a thing. Most of them however, do use RCA for input. Best thing you can do is ask the marquee magician guys if there is support for displaying the marquees via the tv out port available on many older video cards.

ATI up to their 4 series and Nvidia up to their 9 series GPUs have support for standard RGB and RCA out on many of their video cards.

I picked up a 7" widescreen with hdmi + VGA for about £32. Tried tested, and works a treat! Pictured here:

Thanks for the info.  I did pick up one of those USB MIMO displays yesterday though.  Found a good deal for around $60.   But it's good to know there are other options out there!
