Title: Wire colors
Post by: Richardgregory on October 08, 2013, 11:09:37 am
I'm going to be wiring up my new 1 and 2 player CP and was wondering what is a 'best practice' when it comes to wiring color and buttons/joystick?

Ie.  all blue wire for Player 1 and all red for Player 2

Or is it better to use multiple colors to represent each button?

Black.

This really is personal preference. .. it does not matter at all.  Having different colors can make it easier to trace a wire if there is a problem , but once everything is set up and working, that wouldn't be much of an issue.  I personally used red wire for all of my buttons, and black for the ground wire.

For a large panel, there aren't enough easily discernible colors to make each connection unique, so while it can help a bit to trace them out when you have a problem, colors aren't terribly important.  There's no substitute for a multi-meter with an audible continuity tester.

If it's just for aesthetic purposes, do what looks good to you. :)

I just buy cheap JAMMA harness on Ebay and cannibalize the wiring. Works great.

Someone here mentioned it. I thought it was a great idea and have used it ever since. So much nicer, especially with the ground daisy chain. Plus, you can use the same color coding for both sides.

The colors don't really matter.  If you feel comfortable with using the same color for all players or different colors for different players than by all means do it.  Just remember so things don't get too confusing use black for your ground.   Also if you are OCD like me you can use one of these (http://www.homedepot.com/p/Ideal-Characters-1-45-10-Pack-Wire-Marker-Booklet-Legend-44-103/100118633#.UlQydVCsim4) to know what wire is connected to each button from your controller interface.  (iPac, GP Wiz40, etc.)

Black with black labels with black letters on the labels.  You know, so you can tell what's what.

Paradise Arcade has the rainbow packs (16 wires, 8 colors) of pre-crimped 1-meter wires as well as red or black daisy chains.

All available in .110", .187", or .250".

As a side note, we've started shipping 10 color wire kits as options for our interfaces as well.  They used to be all black, but the cost was no different, so we decided to go that route.   It doesn't make much difference in the long run, with even CAT5 being a decent option.  Where low-voltage/current wiring is concerned for your own projects, if it holds reliably in the connectors, can be handled easily, and it gets the signal from A to B, you are golden.

I am now doing the wiring for my first CP. I like my idea so I am going to share and hope it works out well.

I'm using colorer coded cat-5, the out side of the cable will match the player buttons. The wiring in side the cat 5 will correspond to the same buttons for each player. All the solid colors will be in the same order yellow, blue, green in the top row and all the striped colors will be on the bottom row in the order stripe, yellow stripe, blue stripe, green stripe. I will do the same for the joys stick but with a black strip made with a marker on the cat 5.
