Title: How hard would it be to emulate a 3-screen Sega Strike Fighter?
Post by: Dcpmark on October 07, 2013, 08:59:11 pm
Assuming for sake of this hypothetical that there was a working ROM for an existing emulator, and assuming you could set up 3 4x3 LCDs like the arcade machine, what would you have to do to make it work?

TIA!

I'm not sure what you're asking.  If all your assumptions were true, what else is there to know?

Sega Strike Fighter is a Sega NAOMI game and is playable with Demul emulator.
It requires a pretty top notch processor and video card though.

Demul doesn't support triple monitors as far as I know.
But if it did, you could just use a pc flight stick and throttle.

You answered it. It requires the emulator to support all 3 screens, which apparently Demul does not. It was probably just such a noob question that it didn't register.... :D

I thought I saw that MAME is also listed as a Naomi emulator.....does MAME support multiple screens, assuming there is a working ROM for MAME?

MAME can run *one* Naomi board at about 15% speed with incomplete emulation of everything...

While in theory we could probably hack it up to run 3 I'm not sure anybody in their right mind would want to at this point in time ;-)

Yikes! Sounds like MAME will not be an option. So it sounds like 3-screen support for Demul is my best hope in the future.

I was poking around the Demul forum looking at the capability list, and Sega Strike Fighter is not even listed as a supported game, working or not.  ???

I would imagine you could use one of the newer NVidia graphics cards that support three monitors and put it in "surround" mode.  (I think AMD/Radeon calls it Eyefinity).  Basically makes all three screens act as one really wide one.

I have a newish Nvidia GTX 660 (not sure if it has surround mode), but I'm not sure that would work anyway. It might just stretch the single-screen version of the game to all 3 screens instead of using all the data for the 3-screen version of the game, like this:

I wouldn't worry too much about your configuration for this, it could be 10 years or more before the three screen version is running properly full speed without glitches on available hardware.

If you are really into the game then the single screen version can be had for under $1000. The three screen version is a bit spendier.

Hmmm.....this might be a stupid question, but would it be possible to convert a single screen to a triple screen using LCDs for the side views, and if so, how hard would it be to do?

There are 3 (or is it 4) Naomi boards in the 3 screen versions, with different software to the single screen game, and even a custom bios rom.  It likely uses custom IO boards too.

So no. You can't cheat.

Give it a few more years and it will be under $1K. It is 13 years old already and the game that replaced it (Afterburner Climax) is itself 7 years old. The places that operate the things should be starting to unload them in big numbers soon.

Unfortunately the 3-screen version is just too big a unit to get, even if the price is right.

It's funny that Afterburner Climax is not nearly as desirable to me. The gameplay is WAY too fast, and I don't think you can have a cockpit view like you can in Strike Fighter. The "realism" of Strike Fighter, combined with the arcade-like play really hit a sweet spot for me.

The best thing for me would be to find a bad 3-screen unit with working boards, then rip out the guts and build my own smaller cab with 3 LCDs. The outer 2 LCDs could even fold in or back when not in use.
