Hi everyone,
It's been a while since I've perused the site. I've finally went and purchased a Golden Tee.
I got a Golden Tee Complete with the green board seen here.
(http://i.ebayimg.com/t/IT-GOLDEN-TEE-COMPLETE-Kit-2006-w-29-courses-GREEN-BOARD-/00/s/MTIwMFgxNTk5/z/XiIAAOxy~ilSNjEx/$T2eC16N,!y8E9s2filgTBSNjEwmQHQ~~60_35.JPG)
It worked great for a week then the screen went funky. I'm 99% sure it's not the monitor because when the power is running to only the monitor, it seems clear. Once I boot the hard drive I get a scrambled horizontal picture on the top 3rd of the screen with the colors green/yellow/white. The bottom half is empty with some snow.
I first suspected the Video Card but when I tested it in my Big Buck Hunter, the picture was fine. I also took the video card from the Big Buck and tried it in the GT and got the same results.
Has anyone around here seen this? Any suggestions?
I'm on the hook for the expenses so I hope it isn't an expensive fix.
I have the video card and main board out right now so I can't take pictures but will throw it back in once I get a chance.
Thanks in advance

I was able to test the logic board/hard drive in another Golden Tee complete today(guy I got it from owns a video game business).
The Hard Drive completely boots up with the other game so I can eliminate that from the problems.
The other logic board boots until it reaches Check 2 Complete. It doesn't get to "finding modem". It just hangs there
When I plug both back into my game I get the scrambled screen again.
Here's my thoughts on the matter:
I have a logic board problem, and a Monitor problem. I thought it may be the power supply as opposed to the monitor, but we tested the power supply and it seems to be reading the proper voltages.
Here's a couple pictures of the different situations:
The first shows the Logic board and the LED's that I get on both Games:

Here's a picture of what Comes up on My game..This is the dreaded scrambled screen:
And here's what I get when I plug the logic board into the other game. It freezes at "Check 2 Complete" and doesn't proceed to finding modem.

You have a monitor SYNC problem...
Either the video cabling to the monitor is bad, the video input connector on the monitor board has cracked solder joints, or the DIP switches on the board are improperly set for the resolution of your monitor...
That is...CGA-standard resolution versus EGA- Medium resolution.
-
Awesome, Thanks....
Do you have any idea why the game would hang up at the Boot up screen if the Hard Drive is good? Am I correct in guessing that it's the logic board?
-
#1 u can remove the modem >board<
but this is not your problem..
if it is hanging on boot.? your board but not the other board ?
hd is good, but u will need to chk u53 or u91 and or the boot rom chip
if u can burn an eprom ? i would suggest u d/l egale 2.09..reason for this is
your bud's board may have that up-dated s/w where your dose not
and if the harddrive was ever changed and or copyed ,the bios rom will hang at that exact screen..now pay carefull attenion to pin 1 of all of the chips

My logic board hangs on both games. If I boot my Hard Drive with the other board connected it starts up no problem.
this game was updated with a CD Rom from I believe a GT 2004 or 2005.
I will have a look at the chips and see what we can figure out.
Cheers and Thanks!
-
thats def a monitor sync issue, as for the roms, if you CAN'T burn em, try hobbyroms.com
EDIT: typo
-
now exactley why would the op pay for a rom if they can burn it themselfs?
as the egale s/w 2.09 was posted for free right here
on our board...

Thanks everyone. I'll have to speak to the guy I got the game from and see if he has the ability to Burn Roms.

Okay, we've done some more testing!
-We have a spare Big Buck Hunter red board. We plugged it into the game that was working properly and it powered up all the way to the point that it told us it was the wrong serial number. (Was just checking to see if the boards could be switched..we know now that it can't...right?)
-We took a jamma board from an old Golden Tee 98 and plugged it into monitor of my non working GT Complete. We then got a folded picture but it did get rid of the scrambled and snowy picture. Does this mean the Monitor is probably good...just an issue with the jamma board?(going off memory here of what I've been told..I may not have all the terms correct)
-We tried the V1.06 chip in the red board with the 2.09. It worked fine.. Booted up all the way..
-We also swapped the U53 chip from the green board into the red board and the good game continued to work fine.
Question-Is the U91 Chip the same chip as the U53? They're the security key right?
So we're basically stuck at the same place. We have a 1.06 chip working fine. We know this from testing it in the good GT4. We also have a working U53 chip. Anywhere else I should be looking for issues?
Thanks!
-
u are on the basic right path
u53 is the secuirty key chip
u93 is a 8 pin sot,it is a sub sec. key chip
if u can copy/burn eproms do yourself a fav and run with egal 2.09
the buck and golf red boards are the same less the u53/u93 chip combo
same with the green board's
now on to the board with the video problems
swap the video card,if this dose not correct it
then the big ass lixuix chip is going south
as that is the interface controller
i would expect the timming from the buck to the golf to be dif..as they are..
now also u have a dallas chip in there
it carrys the real time clock and game data,if it has gone south ? u will never get the board right..
start with egal 2.09,go from there

u53 is the secuirty key chip
u93 is a 8 pin sot,it is a sub sec. key chip
In an earlier post you say u91...Is it the u93 I should be looking for instead?
Thanks.
-
Also, what happens if I take the 2.09 out of the Big Buck Hunter and put it in my current set up? Will it cause any issues?
-
u can use the bootrom from buck to boot golden tee
it is just a boot rom, what it means is it chks the hard drive for size and its crc
2.09 fixed alot of crc :mfg-id: problems IT was having, and giving route repairmen a headache
u are correct ..
i stand corrected thk-u
u26
u53
are the proper placement
sorry about that
u26 is a 93lc-xxx atmel 8 pin dip
u53 is a atmel 20 pin dip it carrys the main security key
which is hexcsumed with u26
u15 is the boot rom
u2 is your mux xilinx
u14 is your main mirco :nec:
u50 is your dallas chip..high scores/time keeper
ed
-
Thanks Ed.
The place we are hung up now is on the u26 chip.
We can't swap it out as the other u26 is specific to the red board. Is it a chip that I would be able to order? Is it possible that this is where it hangs up?
Also, we did some tests with a CD Rom plugged in. It recognizes the CD Rom but goes no further. Here's what we get when we plug in the CD Rom. It then stays there.

Just as a heads up....The u26 chip on the green board says SB4 I believe. The red boards u26 chips say red1.
Also, every time we boot up, we get a different LED light combination. Sometimes the 3 on the right. Sometimes all 4. Sometimes 2. etc;
Oh and 1 other thing. When I try to make it enter the test mode it won't. The lights come on the board but the monitor doesn't show anything.
-
for golf it should be sb5
which would make it current s/w
as i am looking at green board now
u22 is your card chip >players card<
u53 is your secuirty chip in my case can-u >canada<
u17 is your rs232 chip
u719 is your modem
u50 is your dallas time clock
u will have to leds on the board 1=green=status 1=red =ide activity
the green is most important
if that led stays green all the time the micro is hanging-up
if the red 1 stays green it means it is not readin the ide right
the other four i will need to chk my notes on
your switchs should be be set as follows
only 1 is run in run mode
i will again have to chk my notes
u41 is a video predriver interface
but again u are hanging on boot
u61 carrys the board uniquie id
if it went south u will never get by boot no matter what u do
try the 2.09 boot rom in all the boards first
forget the other chips for now
i can gudie u better that way
ed
-
The 2.09 works in both the red boards. It does nothing different in the Green board.
The 1.06 that I have in the green board also will boot up in both of the red boards.
It's weird that the u26 would be SB4 in my board. Perhaps it's just an older green board. This game worked before. I helped him install it in the account last summer.
-
yes i have sb4
the IT boards are getting dated....hence u get bad solder joints around the interface chip for the key
u54 on the green board
u54 on the red board
u c when they heat up then cool down and get moved they flex
that is right out of IT,so they are a must chk for this problem
if u are happy the harddrive is working and the boot rom is fine ? then we move on
please rember i deal with 2.09 olny now
as i will not go back to older firmware
because i do not like a putter telling me it wont work with xx drive..
much like hp wont load xp but will load 7..garbage to me..
from here..we remove chips that ARE not need to boot boards
i will list them for u
ed
-
Thanks ed! You're a saviour! :notworthy:
-
chips not needed to boot
green board
u719 modem
u117 rs232 interface
u22 card1 chip
u50 dallas time keeper
red board
u719 modem
u22 card1 chip
u50 dallas time keeper
u117 rs232 interface
chips to chk for bad solder joints u54 this will case a boot up failure >red board<
green board =same chip location
for interface >jamma harness<
green board
u58,u56,u55,57
same applys to red board
for ide interface
green board
u23,u24,u20
this applys to red board
all these are perty much 74ls245 >flat-pack-sot< style chips
they are tri state buffers
things to chk for
solid 12v and 5 volt >most be a tad higher then 5..5.03 is just duckie
12v must be 12v
on the red board make sure your 3.3 is rock on
if u have a green board and want to test it in a red board cabnet
u add 4 jumpers in the power part of the supply chain
12/5/gnd
if these boards where exposed to peanuts, the oil will freg the board up but bad
if water u will be getting a lesson in plca chip replacement
if over/under voltage to many times...it becomes a parts doner
the on board reg's and driver transistors never really fail, unless u did some thing stupied..
the nec processer is a rock and soild
the x-link chip is a piece of junk
do not sneeze to load around it
your graphics interface ic is a rock solid chip
same with your audio out is..u really have to go out of way to freg this chip up
for bench testing
red board >atx< power supply and any style monitor :ie putter with the video card:
or a rgb style
green board
normal 5/12/gnd switching power supply
then the same as the red
rember to have 12/5/gnd for the harddrive
these boards WILL boot a cd first
so if it there it will detect it
then expect a cd or bark at u or hang up >gee<
i never test with a cdrom
olny hd
ed
-
Thanks Ed. I will check these things out this afternoon. Can they send beer in the mail?
-
if these boards where exposed to peanuts, the oil will freg the board up but bad
WUT?! That's a new one for me.
I've had issues with fryer oil messing stuff up (from a close proximity deepfryer.) but not peanuts. :laugh2:
-
ya i have 3 of them now
came out of a account where ppl would eat peanuts, free of course
and then the shells would drop into the machines
how is beyound me
but the boards are messed to say the least
ed
-
So I haven't had a chance to look at the board since Friday.
If I do need to purchase a new board, would you know where to look ed? I see them on ebay but they're upwards of $300.
-
lets go about this in another way
worst case is u got a buatie cab for a mame
which btw has golf on it
i need to look some notes over
but we are going to start with your dip switch setings
and a few other tests
u see we know u have a good hardrive, and if u replaced the eprom with egal 2.09
then we will be getting into good shape
like i asked u need to chk the power at the board
5.03/12
on the green board there is a set of chokes right at the jamma harness hook up point,on the red board it takes a atx style power supply
now what would be handy here
spare secirty chip
spare video card
spare u26
from there once we have done the swaps
and if we still get the problem we can dig a tad deeper
just trying to save u a few dollars here
ed
-
Thanks Ed,
I will check the power tomorrow.
I never thought of going the Mame route, but that could be a brilliant idea. It would also allow me to get rid of the god awful monitor for a much better screen.
But first things first, let's look into this deeper. I have a spare video card, a spare security chip I believe and I will look into the u26.
-
Quick update!
We have gotten the game working...Well it boots now anyways! Not sure what we did, we swapped some chips and boom..it booted up.
Now onto the monitor problems!
-
maybe just a dirty contact on one of the chips legs.
sometimes with all the heating and cooling chips can creep out of their sockets and get contact on a part of the leg that has some oxidation corrosion on it. This is especially true with 70's and 80's chips that had silver plated leads. you'd get that black oxidation on the silver.
sometimes just pushing down on a socketed chip and hearing it "crunch" is enough to get good contact. sometimes you have to pull them out and put them back again to scrape off that oxidation.
-
there u go
patinace pays
now do yourself a fav
either recap the monitor or ditch it for a lcd
stpcore goes into detail on his pga thread as to what size fits right etc
just rember the tube is dated,so it will start to gun down any time now
ed
-
Thanks again ed.
I've looked through stpcore's thread...and also done some digging elsewhere.
Does anyone know of a LCD monitor that is plug & play. I've seen reports that a few are.
-
with golden tee, the resolution it runs at is not quite standard. there is another post where i posted the frequencies used in the game.
this isn't a problem with an analog device like a crt monitor, but becomes a real issue with the strict frequency requirements of LCD.
one issue i ran into was that the monitor tries to lock onto the odd sync frequency and you end up with a weird pixel wobble. while not a deal breaker, it's kind of annoying.
-
Thanks Shawn,
If you go with one of the video converters will that fix the issue? If so, are there any you'd suggest?
Also, I've seen some people say they put a 27" 16x9 in to the cabinet but I can't see that unless you want to do some wood work. Any size suggestions?
-
i actually didn't have any luck with the video convertors. like i said, it's a real oddball frequency.

ya shawn, rickn had that problem with drop in lcds
he had to have the mfg of the display write coutom code for the lcd's
that nick btw might be the 1 to chat to about it..
i know he explained it 1 day in detail to me
>tecon-board<,and such, but i just truly forget..hes owes me a cup of java..might be time to take him up on it..
ed
-
an off scan frequency isn't a big deal for a CRT, it just means you sqwash the picture a little bit to make it fit.
simply put an LCD must have an exact frequency because the screen is a fixed size. otherwise it must do some duplication of some pixels and cutting out others and it ends up a big mess.
but yes, i could see that rick had issues because the frequency is just outside of the standard.
i never got a chance to test out any other video modes available other than ega. perhaps another is inside the range. can you switch these to standard VGA?!?!? i don't even know anymore.
