Title: Arcade Cabinet software
Post by: Slippyblade on October 05, 2013, 04:36:55 pm
I'd love to get a thread going discussing the various software that is used in arcade construction.  I've seen many programs over the years come and go, many links are dead.  I wanted to do only free software, but there are some very good paid progs out there so I am including those.  If there is something like this already, I'm stupid and didn't find it.

Wow, I AM stupid.  Just found the Wiki.

However, enough folks responded that I'm gonna update the thread anyway.

DESIGN
Sketchup (http://www.sketchup.com/) - simple yet powerful CAD style program.

CABINET AUTOMATION
JoyChoose (http://malafe.net/index.php?page=plugins#joychoose) - JoyChoose is a plugin designed to work with Mala to automatically switch your joystick between 8, 4, and 2 way.
mRotate (#post_) - Monitor rotation controller (can't find dl link)
ControlChoose (#post_) - JoyChoose on steroids.  Allows automation of all controls. (Can't find dl link)

ARTWORK
GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/) - Photoshop style art program.  Tons of plugins.
Inkscape (http://inkscape.org/) - Vector graphic program.  Great for side art and control panels.
RealWorld Paint (http://www.rw-designer.com/image-editor) - Paint program, I know nothing about this one, sorry.
Paint.net (http://www.getpaint.net/) - My personal favorite.  Pixel level paint program.
Microsoft Expression Design 4 (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36180) - Vector graphic package, supposedly easier to use than Inkscape.

Misc Utils
JoyToKey (http://joytokey.net/en/) - Converts gamepad inputs to key strokes.  Shareware license.
Xpadder (http://xpadder.com/) - Converts gamepad inputs to key strokes. Requires purchase

Problem is several of the links to various software packages are dead.  And some of the packages are just borked.  CPMaker is a good example.  The link on the wiki goes to Mameprojects.com which is no longer a real site.  It's been cash parked.  Googling for CPMaker does find a SourceForge entry, but there are zero files in the DL section.

MRotate, JoyChoose, ControlChoose.
(But these are specific to automated cabs.)

Once again, we can see where Rick's mind is at -- pole-vault for the gutter, man.   ;D

BTW still no answer to my question here (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,134302.msg1391759.html#msg1391759) about who could take care of Rick's gimp while he was in rehab after the intervention.    :lol

Two good front ends are GameEx and Hyperspin. Also AutoHotkey is great for remapping.

Microsoft Expression Design 4 is a great (and FREE) vector graphics editor:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36180 (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36180)

I find it much easier to use than Inkscape.
