I was searching Kijiji for local arcade cabinet deals, and came across this (http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sell-video-games-consoles-other-Custom-Arcade-Cabinet-W0QQAdIdZ528751004). Is this the cabinet that the newer user here posted, that got panned by everybody for looking too much like furniture? (I'm only asking, because I couldn't find the original thread to compare.)

But... $2100 for a computer and a Tankstick cabinet... Wow.

Yes they do -- and according to his follow up post HERE ( http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,134313.0.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,134313.0.html) ) It sold so I guess he is now trying to make a business out of it (or he's listing an item he supposedly already sold !)

He does have a website, and it looks like he's building and selling them out of his home. (Hey, like I do!) It MUST be popular though! He's got SEVEN testimonials!!!

And of the SEVEN two actually say the thing is built like a "Tank" :laugh2:

I just went there. www.mancavearcade.webs.com (http://www.mancavearcade.webs.com)

wow, a DOUBLE Xarcade setup?

Careful there! I'm sure that's a one-of-a-kind, irreplaceable prototype!
-
Well, more power to the guy for making money off of his "design" ...
For me personally, it looks rather simplistic for the cost.
Wondering what his cost/profit margin is.
-
I'm sorry- I thought it was ugly then, and I think it's still ugly now. Functional, yes. Ass-looking, yes.
-
I can't even say for sure if all his designs are functional even.
He labels this one as virtual pin. My gut tells that it might be missing at least one part.
Oh, and funny how all his testimonials are fans of the double exclamation point!!

HAHAHA!!!!! C'mon, man!
-
I'm not one to normally pile on, but those testimonials are so obviously written by the same person it's ridiculous.
"Ecstatic praise!! Followed by description of ease of setup... and built like a tank!!"
-
In all honesty, I went looking at the local Kijiji for people who may be my competition, and all I could find were $1750 tabletops and this $2100 ... armoire? It would seem this guy is about 15 minutes from my place, and trying his hand selling into the GTA market.
-
Holy crap, I wasn't going to touch this one but that dual arcade tankstick for a 4 player setup really grinds my gears.....
I consider most of us Artists of a special type. It is not all easy to make a quality product. To be so lazy about it though....I mean come on.
Also, there are obviously some who are more like "Monet" and "Gogh" than others but it still hold true.

My biggest beef is that you have people overvaluing their work, and trying to pass off inferior products and saturating the marketplace with expensive, overpriced junk. It does nothing to promote the craft; it only serves to try and profit from people who may not know better.

Past epic fail threads have taught me to always attach the pics before they are lost.
Greats like Punchout and Star Wars Pachinko have been lost.
-
I was going to step in and defend the coin doors at least. Then I realized the bits at the top aren't etched.
I dunno... maybe the boards and internals might be worth $400... maybe....
-

Am I doing this right?

I don't think that cab is an epic fail. His construction quality is probably better than mine.
If someone wants to pay him 2 grand for it (without software), then good for him.
-
I don't think that cab is an epic fail.
Did you see the double X arcade one?
-
The issue isn't the craftsmanship, its the execution of the idea. That four player machine needs FAA clearance to be delivered.
-
Kinda looks like cheap cabinets you can buy at Walmart, painted and modified to fit the CP and Monitor.
Now why didn't I think of that?
Actually I did, but I figured it would look like horse droppings. Was I right?
-

:lol
Yeah, that one is pretty bad, but it almost had to be a customer request.
Personally, I think it looks like something that would sell well for $300-$350 flatpacked and assembled like ikea furniture.
Tons of people have asked for that.
I think the biggest shortcomings are these:
He's using the USB connector instead of PS2 on the x-arcade which means that there is a limit of 6 simultaneous inputs including directions. I'm sure this is the case since he says a USB keyboard is included and the x-arcade requires a PS2 keyboard to be plugged in for the PS2 output to work. If it had a PS2 keyboard connected, he wouldn't be including a wired USB one.
He's using Maximus Arcade - front end of noobs.
These two things make me think that he's someone who doesn't really know much about this stuff, but got their own rig running with an x-arcade and thought "Hey, I could make money off this!"
I have a friend who had that reaction to my first setup. He thought we would throw a cheap computer in every old cab we could get our hands on and put it up on ebay "with thousands of games included!" It took a while for it to sink in that it would be like selling a jukebox with thousands of bootleg songs downloaded off the internet.

Hey now that's a bit harsh -- I kind of like MA ! :dunno

The real pros just use mame32 / whatever they call it now and only install front ends on other people's machines.

All I know is that the builder came here for advice, called me an old man and didn't follow any the experienced advice which was offered.
-
....yuck....& he's still accomplished more than me.
As for the Ninja Turtles cab, that made my eyes bleed. The raw audaciousness of that colour scheme though--I gotta say, at least the artist had balls.
-
This whole affair has been hilarious. In many ways.
Now, where's my 80's Easy-Assemble Black Ash TV+Betamax unit?
-
WTF is up with putting giant eye balls on top of a cab? :laugh2:

I was going to say "call up CrapMAME! We have a new winner!!" (double exclamation points add meaning)
...but then I saw the "pinball" cab and the TMNT...
Thread of the year.

Hey, to each their own. Hopefully he is making the cabinet parts, and not trying to resell modified store furniture, that may be a copyright issue. I, personally, wouldn't want a cabinet sticking 18-24" off the wall due to that lean back, on top of other things.
-
given how the furniture looks, I wouldn't think the company would even care.
-
I found this over in the project section.

-
total is a grand including a free computer? :'(
-
I'm a huge proponent of "to each their own" but wow, just wow.
-
If this were a teenager taking a stab at his first cab, or a single dad building something for his kids out of existing parts and this is what they came up with, I think I'd feel differently (and I think some of you would agree). But this is a vendor charging a lot of money for what is really an uninspired plug and play package setup.
-
So the original poster who claimed to have designed this POS was really just trying to resell another companies cabinet kit. He didn't even build it.
-
The dude does not abide this.

Its a definite ripoff, maybe the same, but the stand looks different to me. Its like a more expensive than the original clone. :dizzy:

Looks like a recroom masters clone to me. Do we have to go any further down this rabbit hole? It's depressing...

Had to google that one....and....what!

You went further down the rabbit hole. What I find depressing is that I spent years lurking here being quiet and polite, eventually finding a cab (which I appreciate), yet some money hungry punk makes a clone of a pseudo-viewlix style cab with crappy controls comes here and gets rude after asking for advice from some very experienced people.
Then actually sells the thing for a couple of grand...
*pops another zanax.
I guess my skin needs some thickening.
-
Then actually sells the thing for a couple of grand...
I don't think there's actually any proof of that, unless I missed something along the way. I certainly don't believe for a second that any of his "testimonials" are real.

HEY! Thats my project! Or... my furniture as you guys say. I love the thing. And I was up and running in a day. Maybe down the road I can restore something but I just dont have the time... family and 2 jobs will do that to you. It looks decent and its solid. Also I'm not selling anything. The review is up so I might as well affiliate. I'm just proving a point that anyone can put one of these together and in turn I hope more people learn about emulation in the process. Ive been a fan of this scene since 1999! In return I am pushing them to beginners and helping the scene absolutely grow in the process. Like to think that is something good that I am doing for this community! Maybe you guys see it differently. Best of luck guys. Ive updated some of the artwork since that article and I have the cabinet where I want it, and I think it looks pretty good! I guess my opinion is really all that matters anyway. Ill post a few pics when its done for the hell of it.

No worries, David- the comments are actually aimed at the guy who made a cheap copy of the design and is trying to pass the off for way more. If your project gets your little ones into classic gaming, more power to you!

Ahh thanks. I should have read the beginning of the thread. Traffic tracking brought me to the 2nd page. =) Have a good day guys, the hell with the scammers!
