Title: Picking up a Spy Hunter cabinet
Post by: Hutt on October 03, 2013, 07:17:55 pm
About to get a Spy Hunter cabinet. The cab is in pretty nice shape and will probably not require any work.
The bad part is there is no controller, back glass or monitor.
The boards and PSU are there but no way to test until I get a monitor.

There is a pretty decent looking controller on ebay right now that the seller said he will ship to me for $140
Also a nice looking back glass the sell will go to $110 for me.

Are these prices a little high?

As for the monitor can I get a new lcd monitor that will work in this?

It may sound a bit high, but its not really, if they are in nice condition, the steering wheel is like powdercoated pigslag or something, they all are flakey, so dont feel cheated if thats the case... That cab is ugly heavy though, dont forget to bring some help, and a cart. Lift with your knees, not your back. ::)

Well, the CP has been ordered. My main question now is about the monitor... its been a long time since I messed with an actual machine as opposed to something non mameish.
What is going on in the world of monitors these days? Will I have to stick with a CRT or is there an LCD out there with hookups that can be used with this game?

A used crt is about all your going to find, even if you find a nos the price is going to be as high as a lcd.... Happ is where Jen gets her monitors, with the conversion kit monitor and bezel the cost can get a little scary, but the good news is you only need to do that once, cause when you need a new monitor, just drop a new one in there.... Of couse there is also converting a tv, but in the end its not original anyways.

I called happ and they said the conversion kit wont work. I believe the way he made it sound was like they only work for horizontal games....

I tried emailing arcademonitor.com but they did not reply. I also called them (twice) and just get answering machine.

Any other thoughts? Is there any kind of kit that does exist so I can simply put a lcd in this? That would be my preference.
If not does anyone know anywhere that has NOS tube monitors for sale?

Hey thanks!

I really like that $150 new price!!! Spy Hunter is 19" correct?
You know what sucks about all of this.... I got out of this hobby for a long time. Had nothing for quite a few years.
I finally finished building my MAME cab this year so that is nice... but I used to own TWO Spy Hunter machines before I sold everything  :banghead: :banghead:

And yes, this is for home use... and when I had them before one was in my kitchen! Must be a popular spot for that game :)
