Title: Oculus Rift and MAME
Post by: FALSE on September 25, 2013, 04:08:57 pm
I was thinking about how one could use the Oculus Rift in the world of MAME.
I thought it might be cool to create a 3D virtual arcade you could walk around in wearing the Rift of course.
You would have whatever cabinets you wanted in the arcade and just be able to walk up to one and start playing.
While you were playing the game, you'd be standing at the cabinet still and be able to turn your head and see more cabinets to either side.

Well beyond my abilties to accomplish nor do I own a Rift, I just thought it would be really cool.

A frontend which allows you to build 3D spaces (arcades) already exists, and it's pretty cool:

It's a bit daunting to set up, but I had it running at one point.  Custom menus are where it lost me.
It hasn't been updated in a while, but people are still building 3D models of arcade cabs for it.

The other possibility is OpenQWaq.  It was built for different purposes but allows you to build 3D spaces where you can walk around.  I did some preliminary setup and got a few arcade machines in.  Worked pretty well.
