I was wondering if anyone had tips on applying vinyl to particleboard and plywood?
Should I paint it first or get a sealant?
Anyone ever try a watered down wood glue as a sealant?

What do you mean by 'vinyl'?
Pliable Upholstery type material or unbendable tap plastic type material.
If your referring to diner booth, sit on it vinyl, then I would recommend sprayable 3m contact adhesive or brushable weldwood contact cement. Both products work great.
If you are referring to unbendable tap plastic type material i've sucessfully used titebond II wood glue. Scuff up the glueing surface, apply glue and clamp.

I'm talking about self adhesive vinyl like what is used for vehicle graphics, signs and cabinet side art.
My concern is that there could be difficulties adhering to naked wood.

On particleboard my experiences are good with:
- Sanding everything smooth (min 240 sandpaper)
- Paint it
- Apply stickers
This should give a nice smooth surface.

I made the mistake of not sanding and cleaning ply enough before applying vinyl. It does not look great, but OK. OK for me is just not good enough.
I am tempted to start again and apply some laminate first. On to laminate it looks absolutely great.

1 part glue/ 1 to 2 parts water. apply with foam brush, let dry and sand with 220 grit. repeat process.
I think Bruce Lee used this method but I'm having trouble finding any documentation

Matt is on the spot with this. I have however applied Vinyl on Sanded ply from a big box store directly and it's rock solid too. If it's not sanded ply from the store, then you gotta sand it well and then use an air compress to blow it clean.
