Are there any games you have played in MAME that work better with controls that weren't on the original machine?
Like playing tempest with a joystick or a wheel game with a spinner, etc, etc.

"Better" is subjective, but playing arcade gun games using a touchscreen can be fun especially when using a stylus.
Like Operation Wolf.

I prefer going the other way on that idea.
Puzz Loop + Puzz Loop 2 come up with joystick as default control in the ROM. :dizzy:
Enable Service Mode (dip switch menu), "System Configuration", set controls to "dial controller" FTW.

I didn't say it was better, just giving an example of what I mean.
Always so quick to give me ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---! :'(

Not related to MAME but I like playing NES games like Bigfoot with a joystick. No more blistered thumbs.
-
Left/right buttons instead of joystick on every left/right game.
This may be because I only have one good 2way joystick at the moment, and that's in permanent use for Defender.

No :)

Street Fighter et al. with a hit box.

playing asteroids on a streetfighter layout is schweet.
joystick left / right for steering
joystick up for thrust
two buttons for firing
one button for hyperspace
playing world class bowling with a joystick throws the ball perfectly straight
at full speed ensuring a strike every time.
using a trackball for Cheyenne and other light gun games works nicely too.

Playing lightgun games with a mouse is easier, though IMO it's no fun without the gun.

"You're dead, you're dead, YOU'RE dead!"
Sounds fun! :laugh2:

I'm with you that joystick left/right is ok for Asteroids (though I wouldn't say better than buttons), but not up for thrust. That was ok on the home computer versions where you only had one fire button, but button for thrust is much better IMO.

I don't know that it's necessarily 'better', but Pole Position with a trackball makes it ridiculously easy.

I like to play Street Fighter with a steering wheel.. Right turn, Down shift, Right turn + Down shift, Gas... shoryuken!! :banghead: ;D

I played marble Madness in mame using a joystick rather than mouse or trackball. With the joystick you get 100% speed (I think). Well... it;s a darn sight easier anyway, but still kinda challenging at the later levels.
I also built a Robotron bartop using U360s rather that the standard Wicos in the arcade. For a bartop the Wicos are far too stiff and just means you end up pulling the machine all over the table.
U360s are still circular restrictor and very smooth. So I'd say they are better, but no doubt officianados will disagree vehemently.

For games with left/ right buttons, I am going to have the option to use a joystick OR the buttons. I think the reunion version of Space Invaders (with Qix) has this option.
Probably Super Punch-Out and Arm Wrestling would be better with a button for the "pull up joystick" thing. Also, maybe buttons instead of joystick for Arm Wrestling.
I guess with emulators you can use a spinner instead of mouse (they only made a mouse for SNES) on Arkanoid: Doh it Again!. Speaking of this, any way to play the Xbox 360, Wii and DS versions of Arkanoid with a spinner (on a TV, I know they make a spinner for the GBA slot of DS)?

Someone call me?!
I built a spinner arcade cabinet a few years back. This one to be precise:

Anyhow, I think Gyruss and Time Pilot are way better with a spinner. I don't have Star Castle setup to play on a spinner, but that's another game that I think would work better with a spinner. Some games give you a choice in their setup screens, like Puzzloop, between a spinner and a joystick. I'm guessing we can all agree that Puzzloop is way better with a spinner than a joystick. Here is a video of the spinner in action:

Don't be afraid of progress.
Unless we are talking about 30+ year old games, then be afraid. Very afraid.

Wow, I had no idea you could use a spinner with Puzz-Loop. That's awesome.
