Title: How to connect Playstation1 to VGA monitor
Post by: jimmer on September 19, 2013, 07:16:18 am

To legally demo my cabinet which has swappable panels I want to put a playstation 1 into a cabinet and play Defender and Robotron on it.

I've got the encoder side understood.

But what's the cheapest way to connect the PS1 to a VGA PC monitor?

(I haven't got a PS1 yet)

I'm pretty sure there are more knowledgeable folks on the board who can chime in to confirm but the PS1 does not have an easily hackable way to output VGA. You can always use a converter...But the quality sucks and they are not really cheap.

I think the dreamcast can output VGA, does it have the games you want?

I've found composite to vga converter for £14 on ebay, that will do even though it's more than I'll pay for the PS1 and the games together.

Quality isn't very important, it's just to be legal when I demo my cabinet. Could have used some of the games that are legal on MAME but I wanted Defender and Robotron if possible.

OK, that should get you going.

How are you connecting your controls?

Is there a reason you can't use a small TV instead of a VGA monitor?  Cost would be the same or less, and it would look a lot better.

That's pretty much the only way. Have you thought of buying the CDs with the arcade games for a PC? You can buy them second hand for cheap.

It's not the only way.  You could use a SCART cable to get RGB directly from the console, then run that through a line doubler or upscaler to convert from 240p to 480p, which the monitor will accept.

Again though, why is a VGA monitor required?

Redant VGA box with crafty's slg2.

Ps1 never looked better for me.

I also cut the memory card back and soldered up a 7v wall plug so I can still use both men ports on ps1-2.

Composite to VGA does no justice.

Not sure if a PS1 can do component, but you can get a CGA to VGA board for like $25 and it will convert it.  Just got one for my xbox and it works well.

/\...Are you running the official xbox hd pack or just component cables straight up becuase if it is just component cables with no official box your xbox is not getting the lovin it needs still and missing out on proper display res's.

there is also a setting in the system settings once the official box is connected.

my xbox pretty much looks the same as a 360 the way I have it setup.

it's even better then the 360 if the 360 is on a regular crt none hd.

I don't believe that is entirely accurate.  I am using just the component cables for the xbox.  I'm not using the old HD box.  Even Microsoft eventually offered a direct component cable option.   And as you mention, when connected the xbox dashboard does have a setting that will allow you to enable HD resolutions.

My xbox is softmodded with XBMC and is setup to support 1080i, 720p and 480p resolutions.

I use it to run CoinOps and Visionary emulators which run at 720p if supported...

Now with that said, I've got a couple monitors that I've played around with to test this board and one of my monitors is a Dell 24" widescreen that does have direct component input and at 720P it does look sharper than running 720p through this VGA converter and going into the monitor via d-sub/vga.  However it's still considerable better than any other option like s-video or composite.
