Title: Question about black frame insertion for Calamity
Post by: bulbousbeard on September 13, 2013, 09:06:32 pm
Hi Calamity,

In the future, is GroovyMAME going to be able to support doubling refresh rates along with the monitor = lcd setting and black frame insertion to take advantage of 120hz LCDs?

For example, running Mortal Kombat at 108hz and inserting black frames...

I'm curious if any of the 120hz LCDs actually support running at variable refresh rates like that. It seems like a 144hz refresh rate LCD would be good enough to double any arcade game's native refresh rate (121.2 or something for Pacman), and that this could potentially be the best way to play arcade games on an LCD.

The CRT in my cabinet died (25"), and I've been having a very difficult time finding a replacement that doesn't have burn in or some other problem, and I'm beginning to lose hope. That's why I'm really interested in the things we can do to make LCDs as good as possible.

Thanks a lot!

Hi bulbousbeard,

There is no evidence that I know of regarding 120 Hz LCDs that support variable refresh rates. I'm inclined to believe they will be fixed at 120 Hz or a few discrete frequencies at the most, but you never know.
