Title: Two player cockpits
Post by: ark_ader on September 11, 2013, 05:17:21 am
Has anyone built a two player cockpit for console games and PC arcade?

I have two spare Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles and my new house has a large area for a game room.

I'm thinking two coffin head to toe cockpits, or is it easier to make them side by side?  The other player cheats a lot by looking at my screen,  which has me thinking of opposite end cockpits for shooters and racing games.

Thoughts?

Yes.

You'd probably get more info if you posted this either in Main or Project Announcements.  They see a lot more traffic than EE does.

A few members here have twin driving cab setups, but they've all been conversions, all side by side.
The Logitech wheels will work perfectly with PC/PS2/PS3, so you can have all those in one cab if you like.
There isn't a PC driver for the xbox360 wheels.  They'll work on a PC, but there will be no force feedback.

I'm in the process of building a pair of matching driving cabs, but it might as well be a conversion as I'm using Sega Model 2/Naomi bases and dashboards.
Mine will be PC only.  I've picked up at least a dozen good pc racing games for next to nothing in the past few months.  Most were $5 or less.  Even recent games like Dirt 3 have been on sale for less than $7 recently.  Most activate on Steam, some on Origin.

For me, whether to put them opposite or side by side would depend on the room they're going into.
I see what you're saying about looking at the other persons screen, especially for games like Virtual On (which had tinted glass between the players).
It's more of a group/social thing if you're side by side though.

And then there's SailorSat:

I doubt I need to explain.

Yeah, I was just floating the idea out there.  Maybe Saint can move this to Driving and Racing...

I wanted it multi-purpose for FPS, MAME and racing games.  I have access to two car seats,  2 of everything really, and it would be cool to have these similar to firefox cockpits.  Also I like the ability to swap out CPs.  Looking at the picture below I cannot see how difficult it can be.  It would be nice to be immersed in game and seated comfortably.  Question would be how to slide the seat forward and have it lock and unlock without losing fingers?

Something that can be tidy, cool and contained.

Seems like there are three variables at play if you want to avoid players being able to cheat by glancing at the other player's monitor.

1. Distance to monitor -- Seems like the first variable to solve for based on what looks good for game play.

2. Center-to-center distance -- If the positions are too close, it's easier to look around the divider.  If they're too far apart, it wastes floor space.

3. Divider -- The distance should be set so each player can see the other player but not the other's monitor.  Doesn't need to extend all the way to the ground

If PL2 leans over to cheat (green), throw an elbow or two to keep him in line.   :lol

It's not cheating, it's winning. >:D

A simple sliding divider door or curtain,  could be easy to route in / install for a dual enclosed cab.

Curtains would be the easiest, as they compact without eating space up.
A sliding door would provide a little more acoustic reflection to the sound systems.

An alternative to a curtain, is a set of blinds or shade blinds.

Similar but not as tall, and the screen would be smaller.

A nice place to hide away from the world.  I bet you can get 3 22" screens and a Lazyboy in there easy.   :applaud:
