Title: Looking for small 20 wire connector
Post by: tony.silveira on September 10, 2013, 09:20:21 pm
hi all,

i received my displayport cables today thinking i had a long night of wiring ahead of me but after stripping down the end of one, it only has 15 useable wires (and 1 common ground).

so, i'm on the hunt for a connection type that can handle 20 wires and i would very much like something small and compact.  i may be able to get by with 17 connections instead of 20.

i've searched high and low for something small and compact and thought i had it with the displayport but even though it has 20 pins, they don't feed straight thru.

anyone have any suggestions?  might there be a displayport cable where all 20 pins feed straight thru?

any ideas guys?

thanks

does the connection happen at a panel - if so, dsub 20 with solder cups would be a great connector.  same as a parallel printer port.

those are the same thing except D sub 25.  great minds think alike.

sorry guys, wasn't very clear.

it's not the cable thickness i have in mind, it's the connectors at the end.  i'm looking for small and compact.  the parallel and centronics that have the wire count are just to big on those ends.

the thought is to mount it to my panel and my swappable controllers will drop in and plug in.

then as TopJimmyCooks
pointed out digikey or mouser
u must pick what u want :panel mount: or :twin in-line: with hood's
just as easy to take 25pin to 25pin male to male
and go to what ever with it..

for drop in controllers with a lot of connections look at pogo pins as well from digikey or mouser.  They've always been too pricy for me but one day someone will do something sweet with them.

man i'm lost on that site.  i found a couple that could work but in all honesty, i'll probably go with two vga connectors or one vga and one minidisplayport (might as well and try to salvage what i've bought).

i just can't find that ne connector where i say "THAT'S IT!"

if anyone has any suggestions, here is what i'll be doing and using my current vga connectors as examples:

on my panel, centered top above the trackball, i'll be flush mounting my male vga connector.   you'll be able to wipe your hand over and not feel a lip.

then on the bottom of each swappable controller, the female connection will be surfaced mounted so that when lowered into place, it will plug into the panel connector.

some of the stuff i saw on mouser that have the pin count i would need to wire, almost like a molex connector.  i can certainly do this but i always found the housing and pins to have a bit to much play in their sockets so hoping someone has the magic pin/plug i'm looking for that they can recommend.  hell, i even thought of a cartridge board/socket taken from a gameboy but i think that cartridge board sticking out of the bottom of the add ons could end up breaking.

i appreciate it guys, a lot.  thanks

DO you have any old PC MOBOs and PSUs laying around ? -- perhaps use the 20 or 24 pin MOBO power connectors.

How about this 26 position high density d-sub? (like a VGA connector, but wider)

They sell the pins in bags of 100.

You only have to get 1 in 5 crimps right.   >:D

Either that or talk Neph into crimping pins onto wires for you.   ;D
