Title: want can i do wht a half empty megatouch cabinet?
Post by: uolarethian on September 06, 2013, 04:19:07 pm
So I have a cabinet and the monitor.  I was wondering if I could put a regular pc in it and get the touch screen to work?

absolutely. they would make a great juke interface. or even work pretty good with some point and click flash games like candy crush etc.

the monitor should take 640x480 no problem...depending on which monitor it is you may even be able to do 800x600 with it....be cautioned though, some of the older monitors can get damaged trying to run higher than 640x480 resolution.

the drivers are available from 3M's website http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/Electronics_NA/Electronics/Tools_Support/Support/ (http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/Electronics_NA/Electronics/Tools_Support/Support/)

make sure whatever board you use has a serial port on it...i've never had great luck running serial touchscreens through a serial to usb adapter. Sometimes they work and sometimes they didn't.  :dunno could have been the cheap chinese usb adapters i had too though.

Ok, so I will need to get a new touch screen controller  and the vga plug has been cut off so I will need to figure that out.  I do have and am sure I will have more questions so I will post them here since you guys always have all the answers.  Do I need a special video card for this monitor, and what did the cable from the chassis to the vga port look like?

thanks for any help guys.

what is/was the machine?

they changed things quite a bit...

the monitor should have a "merit type ##" label on it someplace.

if you need a controller (IE you have just the 10 pin right angle connector hanging out of the side of the monitor, wit a green ground wire and a orange/gray power wires, then yes you will need a controller. it's most likely a "white" box.

if you have a box, but it's not responding, check your power connection. it should plug directly to into the small molex plug on a standard ATX power supply what would normally used for a floppy disk drive.

I checked and there is no merit type number on the monitor.  It looks like there was a sticker on the side of the frame but is not there any more.  The cabinet its self is void of any indication as well.  what i do know is that its a kortek chassis and a orion tube.  The plug for the video has 6 wires labled R G B E H V.

As for the controller all i have its a small white box with 12 pin holes and the green wire and the orange/gray wire, they are all cut off as well.

sounds like you're going to need a controller box. They may be cost prohibitive to you as they are rather hard to come by. It would be the white microtouch box that you need (not the black box) same as this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/MERIT-MEGATOUCH-MICROTOUCH-TOUCHSCREEN-CONTROLLER-13-TOUCHSCREEN-14-7010-00-2-/150926530076 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/MERIT-MEGATOUCH-MICROTOUCH-TOUCHSCREEN-CONTROLLER-13-TOUCHSCREEN-14-7010-00-2-/150926530076)

it would be best to take a few pics and post them here to ID the monitor. also take a few pics of the cabinet, it will help identify it as well.

Should just be a regular vga cable unless it's one of the pre-xl units.

Yeah, you have a really old one. That monitor is probably closer to an arcade monitor.

Probably need a rgb to vga card

Probably need a rgb to vga card

VGA to RGB. not RGB to VGA

looks like a maxx upright.

an arcade VGA card can output low resolutions easily, as can soft15k (available for download around here someplace.) i'll see if i can dig up some info on this monitor and confirm what resolutions it can display...but i have a feeling it should do VGA just fine (640x480)

have you had a good look at the chassis? see if you can find any kind of manufacturer or number on the board. don't worry about the tube number (A67X bla bla bla) it's no good to ID.

Chassis is Kortex  there is a sticker with the number 980502009. and another sticker with KTS-F 02070400 next to the focus and screen adjust knobs.

I appreciate all the help but I think your going to need to dumb it down for me.  ???  Do I need a converter or do I wire it up to a vga cable?

I'mma have to do some looking around to find some more documentation. This monitor is many years old now, it's a little hard to come by as evidenced by the photocopy scan of the schematic i linked. after merits acquisition by Rowe/AMI things are a little disorganized.

EDIT:

you know, this monitor is simply a 19" monitor with a touch overlay on it. if you could source an old CRT 19" VGA computer monitor and remove it's case, the tube and everything would drop right in. all you'd have to do is remove the overlay and use some new double sided foam tape to stick it back on. NOTE: Never pry or pull on the touchscreen or pry on it with a screwdriver, It's very easy to crack the overlay...just remove the tape around the outside and use a length of dental floss to cut through the old foam tape.

the advantage to swapping the monitor is then you don't have to worry about doing any signal conversion or hokey cables.

just a thought. I'm still looking for more info regarding the resolution capabilities of this monitor.

this monitor may also be a type 66.  :-\ apparently merit used a mish mash of parts and names for things.

it could also be a type 58 cause some 58 where labeled as type 66   :dizzy:

Is there anything I can do to help with the search, better pictures of the chassis maybe?

I do have a jamma rig set up for testing boards with a cga to vga adapter, would it hurt if i wired the monitor to the jamma harness and see what happened? I don't want to blow anything up.

Also I just want to thank everyone for all the help, I would be lost if not for the help.

you could feed it a CGA (15k) signal first and see. bump it up to EGA (25k) then VGA (31k) be warned, feeding higher res into a monitor not designed for it can kill it.

Will the picture only come in when I have the right signal?

OK, after ordering parts and finding a replacement pc monitor for the screen I just need to know how to hook the power to the touch screen. I have this pc power extender I am going to hack to run the orange and green screen to but i dont know which wires to wire it to. also how important is the green ground wire? Came I wire it to the pc case?

Thanks

the green wire is ground. just attach it to some metal on the chassis or to a screw on the computer. it's important to have it grounded (and not just connected to negative power or left open) because the static buildup from the CRT can short out the controller when/if it discharges through the overlay.

the grey wire is negative. attach it to either of the black wires on your computer power supply.

the orange is 12 volts DC. attach it to the yellow wire on your computer power supply.

best way is to use some double sided foam tape. an L in each of the 4 corners and place it on the tube. alignment isn't critical... you'll align it via software later.

then get yourself some black fabric hockey tape and run it around the outside to keep dust out.

that way, your overlay and tube are separated a little bit and dust won't get smashed in there.
