This guy seems to think that he is the only one has a legit reason to use MAME:
http://www.reddit.com/r/cade/comments/1lqpqm/my_problems_with_people_using_mame/ (http://www.reddit.com/r/cade/comments/1lqpqm/my_problems_with_people_using_mame/)
I like the part where it appears he says that owning the original ROMS (game boards) gives him the license to distribute the roms. Then again I'm not sure what he actually does for a business, the thread is very confusing and there is a pronounced lack of punctuation.

Yea....wow.
Some pretty good responses though. Would be nice to see "Haze" chime in here (or there) about it.

Ugh- the grammar killed it for me three paragraphs in...

3 paragraphs in? Yeah, second sentence started with "allot" and the whole thing went down hill from there.

Not sure what you expect me to say?
It seems like the original poster has a beef with people operating MAME machines on location, or at least that's what I can comprehend through his awful english and rather nonsensical additional points.
MAME does not encourage this, that's why we have the non-commercial use clause in the license.
So in that sense he's right, and perfectly justified to be annoyed when people are replacing originals with MAME or demanding MAME machines instead of the originals offered.
I don't think you'll find a single Mame Developer advocating replacing original games with MAME machines, because that isn't what it was made for, ideally we like to see people use it to help keep the originals running.
The overall MAME hate is still a little uncalled for tho, and it's true many hardcore collecting circles do have something against MAME, there really isn't anything we can do to change those views. Thankfully there are enough people who do see the value of the project to help keep it going. There are other realistic benefits to operators wanting to buy / run original PCBs too even without getting to a technical level eg. it's much easier to find out about a potential purchase these days thanks to MAME and the community built around it. I do wonder how many of these collectors have used that side of MAME either directly or indirectly when deciding what to buy.
Some of the things people have done / do with MAME do make me hate it too, hate having worked on it, hate the people who are abusing it, but I've always maintained that there is a bigger picture and a more important goal we're working towards.
Vendors are always going to struggle, and look for somebody to blame. At least here arcade games have been a dead industry for a long time, if anything they were only ever a temporary bubble in the amusements industry anyway and if you look at what came before it (mostly redemption / gambling machines) and what came after it (again mostly redemption / gambling machines) you can see that. The fact that you see any cabinets anywhere offering real gameplay and no payout is something just short of a miracle. If you can squeeze an extra table for 5 people in the corner of your bar it's going to bring you more money than a traditional arcade game would in a year; most won't even break even due to the cost of electricity and maintenance.
People have been looking for other solutions to the problem for a long time now, even if you go back to the 80s there were multi-game hack boards like '10spot' (multi-galaxian thing) and as you got into the 90s a whole flood of low-quality NES based multi-game bootlegs. People running xx-in-1 and commercial MAME cabinets is an evolution of that (hence why MAME documents such things) but is equally futile, just more ways to part foolish, greedy and naive operators with their money.

my sister works for DOD / DOE and I am friends with the Fbi agents in my town and we know eachother on a first name basis and I went to one of there weddings not to long ago
ya, he's like one of those COD or battlefront xbox kids that says he's "gonna backtrace ur IP for hacking" and he "knows the president of xbox" and he "went to his house yesterday" so he's going to get you banned.

You can get fined for having MAME ROMS??? $10,000 PER ROM??? WHY DID NOBODY TELL ME THIS BEFORE!!!!

The NSA already have a copy of this forums entire user list with their real names and addresses.
If they were going to do something, they'd have already done it.

Oh snap....does that mean if you have a mint ROM list then most of us could be fined up to $40,000,000
Not me of course, I own all the boards for these games...........
-
Oh snap....does that mean if you have a mint ROM list then most of us could be fined up to $40,000,000
If the RIAA or MPAA start auditing ROMS, the fine will be much higher than $40,000,000 because they also factor in the total loss of sales for any and all related items so you'd have to multiply that number by about 1000.
-Mc
-
Oh okay, that isn't so bad. A mere $40 billion, tis pocket change my good sir.

Two problems with that. There is no such thing as a digital copy. The Riaa would be going after the mamedevs as they are the ones who were originally distributing roms.

Always off to a good start when it's a reddit thing.
Got about 2-3 sentences in, skimmed it, threw up into my shirt. Haven't been back since.
Autism speaks, apparently, and I want it to shut up.
As the father of an Autistic child that is mostly non verbal that comment is highly offensive.
That is ban worthy in my opinion, it's sickening that immature people feel it's humorous to take jabs at the expense of the disabled.
This forum just reached an all time low for me. :(

+1 I totally agree with this. It is unnecessary and cruel to compare a disability with idiocity. The two should never be compared, especially in a public forum where misconstrued assumptions can be made to promote attention. Sorry Haze ignorance is not bliss for those poor arcade operators, who scratch a living. If MAME was intended to be a tool, why invoke such restrictions? Please don't bother to answer that. Noboby gives a ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- anymore, to roms, mame, and its various forks to unlicensed game artwork or copyright law. Heck I suggested to the arcade operator just the other day to focus on classic arcade games by sticking mame cabs on his site. The guy has quite a few empty cabs.
Why not make money off your efforts, seems par for the course. Besides who checks the insides of cabs these days as long as your licenses are in order. More power to the arcade OPs.
-
you continue to demonstrate a clear misunderstanding / refusal to understand our reasons.
of course, it's more likely you've just gone back to trolling.
if you're not fussy over what game you're running then there is a near unlimited supply of random PCBs available to fill a cab at any given time, more PCBs than remaining cabs that's for sure.
no reason to use MAME, and we have no desire to make money from it.

I'm glad you have no problems with it. I can think of a handful of games that are pretty rare, and could make some money.

Some of the things people have done / do with MAME do make me hate it too, hate having worked on it, hate the people who are abusing it, but I've always maintained that there is a bigger picture and a more important goal we're working towards.
It's unfortunate Haze, but your work and those of the other dev's won't truly be appreciated until there are only a few Pac-Man and Donkey Kong cabs left in museums (appreciated by the masses I mean, as we all enjoy and appreciate your work now). It's like when someone puts something on the internet, it's there forever, whether they like it or not. MAME has traveled to every part of the world and no one can control who or how it's used, it's just a reality. I appreciate your passion for defending MAME and it's TOS, but I hope it's not at the expense of your sanity. Keep doing what your doing, haters gonna hate...

The more I think about it, there is a certain "elitist" air to those that think anything other than the original arcade PCB should be used in their cab. Original PCB's are finite and every year, more and more disappear. If car collectors only used NOS parts to restore their cars, the classic car industry would have just stopped dead in it's tracks some time in the late 80's. The difference right now is there are still used boards floating around, but look at CRT arcade monitors, it gets harder and harder each year to source useable originals and now, even new.

Agreed. For all those one hit wonders out there that was unique, and constructed by fledgling companies. How many Donkey Kong cabs are out there, PAC man and galaga? Are they still being marketed? Are 30th anniversary cabinets being built and sold? How about PC ports (we are waiting for Sept 25 to roll on, right?) console, etc.
Why is the mamedevs holding up their collective socks on Dragon's Lair or Space Ace? Would that green light the many legal actions due to the team, not from the one time wonders, but from the likes of Sega or Nintendoh? There is no black and white to this argument, never will be. Until you have spent 10k on an arcade machine, only to find it emulated on the Internet, and these people do exist, your "haters" will still have a voice.
This debate is rather pointless until we see a precedent.
-
There is no black and white to this argument, never will be.
Agreed. Ultimately, I have contributed nothing to MAME, but use it and enjoy it all the time. While I button mash all night, Haze and the crew stay up late to crunch code, so if I smell some hypocricy, I have so far kept it to myself as the only horse I have in this game rides on the back of their work. The MAME devs original goal of perserving the classics is an admiral undertaking, and though they wouldn't admit it, I bet the old school programmers from Midway and Namco not only understand the need to emulate hardware that is obsolete, but I can guarantee you they have MAME cabs in their house.
-
The problem with MAME is, you can make money off it. If it provided no value, no one would abuse it.

+1 one the ban. But it not the forum, it's that dude. This board has awesome people in it.
Just skipped through all 173 posts from WindDrake and I don't see any other times he showed this type of behaviour. As ridiculous a comment it is, it warrants an apology, lesson learned and all of us move on. I think it was a temporary lack of judgement. I find his normal posts to be extremely helpful and intelligent. :dunno

the board I used to visit frequently (not arcade related) the ban hammer is usually temporary. I am not the one to call for it lightly though, and I have seen a lot. Maybe this hits too close to home...

Only a select few like yourself, DGP and LMCGadgets know how hard it is to raise an Autistic child, I just don't get the sense from his previous posts that he was intentionally being hateful, I think it was just poorly chosen words.
Don't personally know him, so I could be wrong.
Edit: I hope I didn't mis-represent Harrison's condition LMC. I know he has some troubles that you guys are working through and I am almost positive you said he was Autistic, if not, sorry about that.

+1 I totally agree with this. It is unnecessary and cruel to compare a disability with idiocity. The two should never be compared, especially in a public forum where misconstrued assumptions can be made to promote attention. The poster should apologise and remember words are like bullets shot from a gun: they can hurt and wound and can never be taken back.

What I did say was that the kid who drowned should be made an example of for other children to learn from, so that the child's death would not be senseless. GrayArea was making a the same different point and got banned.

Wish I could, but sometimes it's important to be able to see the bad advice being given in order to put the record straight.
He definitely seems to get off on making us devs feel bad for what we're doing but as I've said before, life is full of cases where people could have done more but didn't and as a result knowledge / culture etc. was lost. We attempt to be impartial and pragmatic in our work and only if you take a very shallow view of what we do / say without actually understanding the project can you call it hypocritical.

I understand that Haze, and he has got getting peoples back up to a fine art.
I have nothing but respect for dev's, be he has no respect for anyone or anything. He is just the forum TROLL and :tool: (I'm pretty sure that emoticon was invented for him).
I don't know why he is here - I seriously don't. There are plenty of other forums he could troll on, and I don't know why he does.
One thing is for sure, it's the usual 'hiding behind a computer screen' stuff - I'd love to meet him one day. >:D

No you cannot ignore me, as you are exactly in the same mindset. You cannot suffer fools, and stupidity just makes you angry. That is why I get creative with my complaints about the mamedevs, as there are so many dimensions where their lack of ethics impact the industry. MAME cannot hide behind popular public opinion, forever. Some responsibility will have to be shouldered. I'm glad you are no longer connected Haze, and still an outsider.

As cousin to someone that's autistic, I'm sorry that you found offense in my light-hearted jab at the previously mentioned redditor.
I understand the kind of effort and energy that goes into raising an autistic child, nevermind getting them into the realm of general acceptability in public.
However, this isn't a shot at you or your son, or anybody with an autistic kid. It's a shot at that redditor. Nobody else.
Your reaction however has been noted, and I'll be a little more careful in the future. My apologies.

Well done! :applaud:

What fines? The only guy that is going to get his turkey cooked is a frequent lurker to this site. This guy has been the prime instigator well after 1999, overseen countless crude hacks and shoddy coding. The rest of us are scott free, but we owe him our gratitude, for without him we would not have our collections.
I love the way back machine. :lol
