Title: i need a quick wiring assist

hi all,

i got a quick one for you wiring pros.  i'll be using a mini displayport for some wiring in my cab and i would like to run power from a molex connector thru two of the wires in the mini dp cable.  do you all think i can run the 12v from a molex thru two of the mini dp wires?

my guess is no but thought i'd ask...

How many amps?  What gauge wire is in the cable?

If you want to light a few LEDs, it should work.

If you're trying to power a 200 watt audio amplifier, then no.

Why are you using a mini display port for wiring?

And I see no problem with running a 12v line through it though. Unless you are pulling mad amps through it.

Edit: ---gosh-darn--- it PL1, you beat me. I will be back to avenge myself one day....You wont know the day, but it is coming....

thanks guys.  just to clarify:

i'll be using a mini displayport cable as it has a few more wires than the vga connection i am using for my swappable control add ons (check my sig for my project link).

i'm wanting to run power for my hang on handlebars.  inside are two small bulbs to backlight the rpm and temp gauges.  they are just for show but if i can get them to light up, that'd be cool.

thoughts?

It should work fine if you can find LED replacements for the original bulbs (SGB-3636-21 according to pg 42, lower right corner of the owner's manual PDF (http://arcarc.xmission.com/PDF_Arcade_Manuals_and_Schematics/Hang-On_Owners_Manual.pdf)).

Not sure of the bulb specs, but many incandescent bulbs draw enough current that they might be a problem.

If the only LED substitute bulbs you can find that fit are the extra bright cluster kind, try using 5v to power 12v LEDs -- less current draw and makes the LED last a bit longer.

I'm going to show my stupidity but I don't know lectrics all that well.

where would I pull the 5v from?  my thought was to just use a molex off the power supply to drive those two lights.

please excuse my ignorance

PC Power supply 4-Pin molex supplies +5vDC and +12vDC. Red is 5v, yellow is 12v. Grab it from there.
