Do you have a warranty? If not can you solder? If yes continue, if not call a repair man or learn to do basic soldering.
This is a big issue with aquos products that receive a lot of hot to cold sessions, eg;
Having it on all day (hot)
And then having cold nights where it is off
Open the back of your tv and check around for swollen and\or leaking capacitors,

In this picture an IC seems to have failed violently causing too much voltage in the nearby capacitors thus destroying them, They are now permanently swollen. The ones on the top left are completely fine.

If you see any, read the information on them and replace them with new ones from radio shack or wherever. I have solved many LCD TVs this way. If you do not have any noticeable capacitor failures you may need to flip the board over to check for any burns on the underside of the capacitors. If you still see no issues then most likely you have a failed "t-con" or "main board". Or even worse is if your LCD Panel has failed which is irreplaceable.
If you give me the exact model number I can help more if you wish.
Good luck!

I completely agree with CoryBee. I have repaired 6 TV's/computer monitors. All with bad caps. You can try and put the model number in ebay and try and buy from LCDAlternatives. I have bought 4 kits from them and they are cheap and you don't have to do any measuring. Easiest way to go I think. Then you just desolder the bad caps and solder in the new ones. Make sure you pay attention to the +/- on the caps. It is pretty easy to do. I have even done one with a crappy radio shack $15 soldering iron (although my newer HAKKO is WAY nicer). You will want to get a solder sucker also. Makes it much easier and they are pretty cheap.

sound but no video...check your backlight inverter.
if you turn it on and shine a bright flashlight into the front and you can see the picture... inverter is toast.

Good advice, forgot about that trick. Do this a lot on repairing laptops to see if the inverter is dead.

Not to derail the thread, but is it common for 'simple, inexpensive' fixes to repair many tv issues with LCD/LED/plasma technology? I'm just wondering if it's smart to buy some defective tv's from e-bay for projects or not...

...Then you buy another inverter? :-\
seriously, you can get replacements off ebay and other websites. got a free 42" and all it cost was 50 for a new inverter. example: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/TOSHIBA-40RF350U-42-LCD-TV-INVERTER-BOARD-SSI400HA22-/190891746856?pt=US_TV_Boards_Parts_Components&hash=item2c7208e628&_uhb=1 (http://www.ebay.ca/itm/TOSHIBA-40RF350U-42-LCD-TV-INVERTER-BOARD-SSI400HA22-/190891746856?pt=US_TV_Boards_Parts_Components&hash=item2c7208e628&_uhb=1)

Yes, I scour eBay and craigslist from time to time looking for TVs that wont turn on. No broken screens.
I have repaired maybe 15 - 20 this way and turned a profit on them. 17" all the way to 50" LED\LCD\Plasma.
It is a gamble though, I have came out on top most of the time and if it doesn't work I make my money back plus a little extra throwing the boards from the unit I couldn't fix on eBay for other people to fix their own.
-
lots of people make good money scooping up broken TV's pulling the boards out and selling the working ones... power supplies, decoder boards, A/V boards...free tv + the sale of 3 boards at 50 bucks a pop = free money :dunno
found quite a few things as dumpster finds that need a little TLC and they are up and going again too.

is there any one close to ohio, usa that is willing to fix this for me?

really?! it's not hard what we are suggesting... The hardest part really is keeping track of all the screws you take out go. :lol
before you even open it up, do the flashlight thing...if you see a picture (look closely) your backlight isn't coming on. ebay search your tv make and the word "inverter" and you will have everything you need.
example: go to ebay.com and search "Toshiba 32RV635DB inverter" BAM! $30 and your running.
sometimes you have to get a little creative and find a number on the inverter board itself but it's still just as easy.
example: go to ebay and search "SSI320_4UC01" easy peasy!

I'm sure I'm not the only one who's thinking, "maybe we need a 'lilshawn fixes LCD/LED/plasmas and shows us what's what" thread. Could we tempt you to do something like this? (Oh, wait. I might be dumb. Is there something like this in the "monitor/video" subforum?)
