I've always put the power button on the top of my cabinets so an adult had to turn it on or off, however now I'm building a pedestal only cabinet, which lacks a high spot for a button. I don't want it on the control panel for obvious reasons, so I've come up with a few ideas...I'd like feedback and possibly other suggestions.
Option a:
Push button mounted inside the cabinet, accessible by unlocking and opening the access panel on the rear.
Option b:
Two pushbuttons wired in series mounted somewhere out of the way, perhaps under the control panel box...one on either side of the cabinet. Both would have to be pressed at the same time to work...this would prevent my 2 year old daughter from activating it.
Option c
Using a keyed cabinet lock that activates a switch when turned. I'd keep the key out of reach of the kids.
Option d
Switch mounted inside the control panel box, just lift up the lid of the panel. I'm afraid my kids would pinch their fingers trying to turn it on. Or disconnect wires accidentally.
What do you guys think?

Option C for me - and let them know where it is so they don't go looking for it elsewhere!

Yea key switch all the way! I installed one on my nephew's arcade I made him. He would wake up in the middle of the night to play the thing so had to do something. Now he does his chores or he cant play it.....don't like vegetables?? No arcade!
-
Key switch should work for a couple years (till they learn to bypass the button :laugh2: )
-
I'm not worried about my boys turning it on to play, but I don't want my 2 year old turning it on and off randomly because she sees a button she can press

Get a button and mount it inside one of those child proof Tylenol bottles :-D
Honestly I would just put the power inside the cabinet and lock the cabinet.

Mount your power button just inside your lockable coin door.

Go crazy and use an RFID switch :)

Put one in your wallet and the cab only turns on when you're close by.
I'm only semi serious, of course

You need a momentary key switch. Wire it to the power pins on your motherboard. Have a smart strip turn on any accessories you might have that are not USB powered.
Turn key for a split second and everything turns on. Tada!

Must. Put. Down. Wallet.

Install a zapper and wire it up to the button. When the little tike presses it, it won't press it again.
We all learn from our mistakes. >:D
No I don't have any kids..

You want a momentary switch, not an on/off switch. An on/off switch would be used possibly in conjunction with a relay to turn on or off power to a power supply and arcade board that would not care if you kill power instantly. A personal computer might not like you killing power. That is why they have a soft power shutdown mode. There is two pins that need to make contact on the motherboard to trigger this action of start up or shut down. Hence the momentary switch. You only need contact for a split second to start up. Contact again for a split second to trigger another action such as shut down.

thanks guys. i am quite familiar with wiring a momentary switch to the motherboard power connector, i just wasn't sure how to keep my 2 year old from using it. i think those key switches are the way to go. putting a button inside the coin door would work, but i dont plan on having a coin door on this thing. i think i'm going to use a key switch....i'll post pics in my project announcement thread

I have always wanted to use a magnet contact sensor to power something up. Like the kind I have mounted in my doors for the alarm system - http://www.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://www.swalarmsystem.com/images/door%2520magnetic%2520contact/MC-33.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.swalarmsystem.com/Door_Magnetic_Contact.asp&usg=__X_NG4ShDkol4LB5xSjiL3qXl15w=&h=516&w=516&sz=30&hl=en&start=5&zoom=1&tbnid=FxLF4FBsYzDgrM:&tbnh=131&tbnw=131&ei=OYoVUsGYLIikiQKs2ICQAQ&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dmagnetic%2Bcontact%2Bsensor%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26gbv%3D2%26tbm%3Disch&um=1&itbs=1&sa=X&ved=0CDMQrQMwBA (http://www.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://www.swalarmsystem.com/images/door%2520magnetic%2520contact/MC-33.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.swalarmsystem.com/Door_Magnetic_Contact.asp&usg=__X_NG4ShDkol4LB5xSjiL3qXl15w=&h=516&w=516&sz=30&hl=en&start=5&zoom=1&tbnid=FxLF4FBsYzDgrM:&tbnh=131&tbnw=131&ei=OYoVUsGYLIikiQKs2ICQAQ&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dmagnetic%2Bcontact%2Bsensor%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26gbv%3D2%26tbm%3Disch&um=1&itbs=1&sa=X&ved=0CDMQrQMwBA)
...And then maybe have a small magnet attached to my key fob or something.

The link I posted is a key lock with a momentary switch attached. The twisted quarter unit you like is a key lock with an on/off switch attached.

This looks to be the momentary contact version at twisted quarter:

I just wire mine up to "the clapper".
No actually I just have my switch just inside the coin door.

If you don't mind a bit more complicated solution you could use something like the secret knock door lock.
http://www.instructables.com/id/Secret-Knock-Detecting-Door-Lock/ (http://www.instructables.com/id/Secret-Knock-Detecting-Door-Lock/)
You could then put the button anywhere without worrying if it'll get pushed. You wouldn't need a full arduino to run it, really just a micro controller and a small relay, probably cost like $8 in parts. Now, having said that I think I'll put one on my son's cab, the baby is forever killing it while he's playing. As thanks for the idea, it's as easy to create 2 as it is 1. If your interested PM me and I'll ship one out once I get it made (probably take a few weeks or so to get it slapped together, programmed and such). Just a thought.
-
that is cool, but probably a little overkill for what i'm doing. i really think that i'll use one of those cabinet door locks like used on a coin door, and mount a switch so that the lock lever actuates the switch when turned. i already have the lock, i already have the switch.
