Good Afternoon.
I've not been able to find an answer to this question by searching around, so I'll just ask. I have MAME 0.149 running on two computers, one of them runs fine, the other computer has music only; the video does not work. Software is identical on both computers, MAME 0.149 running from MaLa 174
Computer 1 (the computer with no MAME video),
Win XP
Dell Dimension P4 3 GHz, 1GB RAM
Video card: Intel 82945G Express Chipset
20" LCD
Mala shows up fine on the screen, but when I select a ROM Mala says 'starting', I see the dos box, and then the screen goes all black. The same thing happens when I execute MAME from cmd line (bypassing Mala).
I know MAME is working because I can hear the music from each ROM after it loads. When I press ESC, I get back to Mala no problem.
I loaded this same software on my netbook to see if it is a software issue, and it works great:
Computer 2 (works great)
Win XP
HP Mini netbook with intel ATOM 1.6 GHz, 2.75 GB ram
Video: NVIDIA ION LE
Built in 13" LCD screen.
Because MAME/Mala runs fine on my POS netbook, I suspect that the video card in the Dell desktop needs to be replaced. If so, can anyone suggest a solid performer? I'm not trying to push the graphic/authenticity envelope, I just want something that works with MAME (i.e. MAME can interact with a plain LCD computer monitor).
Thanks a ton

added note: doesn't really apply to your needs, but anyway fyi Calamity of Groovymame states that for best results (ie. the ability to handle a wide range of custom modes/resolutions), get a Radeon 9250 (AGP), Radeon X300-X600 (PCIe), or Radeon HD 4xxx (PCIe)
