Title: On the off-chance OpenJamma does not come to fruition....
Post by: nagamitsu on August 10, 2013, 07:47:49 pm
What would you guys suggest/recommend? I feel the X-in-1 game board are a bit pricey IMO, and would they function as a Jamma board plugged into harness?

My other thought is I start buying cheap original PCB games, a bit of a pain swapping in what I want to play, and will be limited on total number of games I would have in possession.

I still have fingers crossed OpenJamma board comes available, but it's been quiet in way of progress/updates.

Wasn't planning on going MAME route. Have used MAME on the kids PC, perfectly fine, but wanted to keep my cab as it is with Jamma harness etc.  :)

Keep the jamma harness and go for a jpac to connect to a PC.

Not trying to knock openjamma or embedded devices in general, hell I was in line to test the device and i sincerely hope he is still working on openjamma.

With that being said however, Mame, retroarch etc were primarily meant and optimized for PCs. Right now that's really the most optimal solution even though it may not be Jamma compatible out of the box.

May look into the Jpac route, but still fingers crossed OpenJamma board will happen

Ok, ArcadeSD, plugs into Jamma harness, all sound/video output via harness? I see a VGA on it, but I presume it will send display through harness.

"just the classics", meaning not compatible with much newer games? Since it is SD card supported, I can assume too then that ROMs can be loaded on SD card? Sorry for questions, but this one sounds quite much like what OpenJamma board was to function like and just wondering if it does.  ;D

ArcadeSD has its own emulator built in and supports a specific list of roms, all of which are classic era.

Openjamma almost certainly won't come to fruition. It has sailed over a month past the date that the dev units were supposed to be released, without even a word as to why, when or where. All their facebook page ever shows is stickers and drawings of new logos.

It is reinventing a wheel that already exists and is doing so on a terrible platform. Why do all the standard 60 in 1 and 138 in 1 etc boards suck? Because they are running on an underpowered ARM platform. What is openjamma? Another underpowered arm platform.

They already make something way better than that and they have made them for years. All those 1xxx in 1 boards and 2xxx in one boards are intel PC based systems that connect directly to the jamma harness and have way more horsepower than a 1 ghz arm system. I have no idea why they are reinventing the wheel when they could just order those things without hard drives on them.

FYI the arm boards used in many of these xx in 1 boards are light years below the modern ARM architecture. Even comparing the arm processor in a 5 year old phone to the chipets in these xx in 1 units is like comparing an pre-pentium era cpu to a pentium4.

But everyone has their own ideas about what works for them and why they use them. Some people like embedded platforms, some would prefer a pc. All in the eye of the beholder.

The 2010 in 1 I put in the Hung Donkey was a Core2Duo and ran everything pretty well, even some of the 3D games like Tekken 3 and what not.

Stumbled across Uzebox Jamma today in my searching/reading up of alternatives. Sounds like a good option. What I'm curious about with it however, it loads ROMs in the file format/extension of ".hex", I would be curious if either the board could be programmed to load .bin ROM files or MAME ROM conversion somehow.

uzebox (jamma) is an 8 bit computing platform. it cannot run mame, it does not load roms either.

It's basically a homebrew platform.

Thanks, looks like a decent board though. My initial thought was converting a MAME ROM bin file to hex, then the Uzebox tool to convert to the .uze format required for SD boot loader. But from what you are saying, even with conversion, it probably simply cannot run the original underlying ROM.

its a nice development platform if you want to make your own simple, 8 bit game. it does not have an operating system or anything of the sort. It's just a development board for your own, embedded games.

think of it more like having a blank JAMMA board to make your own game on. A blank pac-man board for example.

I have an uzebox jamma. It is a neat little toy, but not any real sort of solution for anything. It is lacking a bit in the software department.

Wish I was more verse in electronic design and front end loading, so I could build one to do the trick.  ;D

Think I am gonna watch for not too expensive original PCBs, stock up on a few to flip between, until the day that a Jamma board that can load MAME ROMs gets created.  ;)

Have you looked at the Multi-JAMMA? I think it's still available.
