So, I'm new to building my own mame arcade but not new to electronics or mame itself. I recently purchased a cabinet that contained a recap WG k7000 arcade monitor. I'm going to hook it up to my ATI video card.
Things done
- Purchased the Ultimarc video amp/cable
- Purchased used ATI 4870
- Installed CRT_EmuDriver video drivers
- Installed Groovymame
- Windows desktop set to 640x480x32
- All setup done via VNC remote control
Questions
- To prevent the monitor from receiving non-15khz signal, when do I turn it on? Is it ok to turn it on and see the bios loading and windows? Will the drivers set it to 15khz before it damages the monitor and show higher sync?
- Is it ok to use VNC to remote into the system, or does that video mirror driver screw up the sync or resolution for the arcade monitor?
Thanks!

CRT_Emudriver is great, but it doesn't take effect until Windows loads, so you'll probably still be at the default resolution for BIOS, which is probably 31kHz. It might not damage your monitor to display some garbage on screen while out of range, but if you really want to play it safe then wait until Windows is loaded to turn it on.
Eventually you want to set something up to automatically turn the monitor on once your front-end is loaded in Windows, like a computer controlled relay. For now just listen for a login sound and/or keep a PC monitor on hand for setup.
Also, you should ask about CRT_Emudriver or GroovyMAME in the GroovyMAME section.
