As some will already know, I've made my own VGA cable to be used with the XBOX. See here: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,119841.0.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,119841.0.html)
It works great with Frosty's VGA patched EVOX M8+ BIOS on a modchip.
Now I'm trying to do a softmod and use the same VGA cable. My first thought was to use Frosty's Dual-Boot VGA Softmod so that's what I've tried.
What I've done so far:
1. NDURE/XboxHDM hotswap softmod
Everything went smoothly. XBOX booted to avalaunch (I think it's avalaunch? whatever, it's irrelevant)
2. Booted with Frosty's "XBOX Rescue Disc"
This gets me into the actual C, as opposed to the shadow C.
3. FTP into XBOX, delete the contents of C and E
As instructed in the readme.txt included with the dualboot vga softmod
4. Continue FTPing, copying the contents of the C & E folders of the dualboot vga softmod
5. Reboot XBOX (with power button)
Upon boot, I get the EVOX dashboard as opposed to avalaunch, so the replacing of files has at least partially worked.
6. Reboot XBOX (with eject button)
This is where the VGA thing is supposed to come into play. What happens is the tray ejects (I would have though it wouldn't) and other than that, it boots exactly the same as with the power button. When hooked up to composite TV, the colors look normal. When hooked up with the vga box to a monitor, everything is green and dark, just as it would look with an unmodded XBOX.
So that's where I'm at. Don't know what to do. XBOX-SCENE seems to be down so I'm hoping there's someone here who might be able to help.
Here's the readme.txt that comes with the dualboot softmod
Frosty's Dual-Boot VGA Softmod v1.0
-----------------------------------
Disclaimer: I take absolutely no responsibility for what may result from
the usage of this softmod. By using this softmod, you are
agreeing to be held accountable for what may result from the
usage of this softmod. Use at your own risk.
NOTE: This softmod is intended ONLY for v1.0-v1.5 NTSC XBOX consoles!
If you have a PAL XBOX console, you will need to use a NTSC/PAL
switching utility to change your PAL XBOX to an NTSC version
before you can use this softmod. (Enigmah PAL-NTSC Switcher can do this)
NOTE 2: This is a softmod, not a BIOS. This softmod requires a RETAIL XBOX
BIOS to run, it will NOT run with any hacked BIOSes or Modchips.
Known Bugs
----------
- Not compatible with PAL XBOX consoles (VGA cannot be used on PAL consoles)
- Not compatible with v1.6/Xcalibur XBOX consoles
- Not compatible with 3944 BIOS consoles (Must be running Microsoft 4034 or higher)
- Not compatible with Modchips (Unless the chip is flashed with a retail BIOS)
Features
--------
- Dual-Boot Normal/VGA (Power Button = Normal Video, Eject Button = VGA)
- 100% FULL VGA SUPPORT! ALL GAMES/APPLICATIONS ARE 100% COMPATIBLE!
- Force480p (VGA mode only, forces 480i games to run at 480p)
- ForceGPUReset (VGA mode only, fixes all 'green screen' games)
- Supports Conexant Encoders
- Supports Focus Encoders
- F & G Drive Support (LBA48)
- Custom Partition Support (Supports up to 750GB HDDs w/XBpartitioner)
- IGR Support (In-Game-Reset, done by L+R+BACK+BLACK or L+R+BACK+START)
- ShadowC Drive (Protects softmod from being damaged)
- VirtualCDROM (Allows mounting of ISOs with DriveImage Utilities)
- NO VirtualEEPROM (Direct writing of EEPROM, no more HDTV enabling issues!)
- EvolutionX +3935 (Main Dashboard)
- Microsoft Dashboard 5960
- XBOX Media Center (T3CH Release)
- DVD-X2 DVD Player (Region-Free DVD Player)
- DVD2XBOX (File Manager)
Installation
------------
NOTE: If you currently have another type of softmod installed, you can use
'Frosty's XBOX Rescue Disc' to gain access to the REAL 'C' drive, which
is required to install new softmods.
1. Aquire FTP access to your XBOX HDD (Can be done by many exploits, I recommend Splinter Cell)
2. Delete all current files in your 'C' and 'E' drives (They must be 100% empty)
3. Transfer all files in the 'C' folder of this package to the 'C' drive on your XBOX
4. Transfer all files in the 'E' folder of this package to the 'E' drive on your XBOX
5. Power off your XBOX once all files have been transferred
6. Now you can power your XBOX in 2 ways:
- Power Button (Normal video output, including HDTV)
- Eject Button (VGA video output)
NOTE: Be sure to enable the HDTV options your VGA monitor supports in the Microsoft Dashboard.
Other Notes
-----------
- XBOX Games need to be placed in either the 'F:\Games' directory or the 'G:\Games' directory
- Emulators need to be placed in either the 'F:\Emulators' directory or the 'G:\Emulators' directory
- If you update XBMC, you will need to rename the 'default.xbe' file to 'xbmc.xbe'
- For partitioning large HDDs, use XBpartitioner. (available at the 'usual places')
- To build an XBOX VGA cable, follow Textbook's excellent tutorial found here: http://www.360mods.net/News/article/sid=32.html
Enjoy!

Is the xbox a 1.6?

Is the xbox a 1.6?
Nope. 1.4 or 1.5.

That mod only works with select monitors....it has to have SOG or synch on green.
You've done everything right as per the instructions if your getting the custom Evox screen, it also may be something wrong with your custom cable.
I used a xbox component cable and coupled it with a component to vga adaptor...Although, it was a crap shoot, it worked with some monitors and with some it didnt...
Also, the dvd is suppose to eject....if you want to switch the vga mode to the power button do this...
Swap C:\fonts\default\open.xbe and C:\fonts\default\closed.xbe and your button operation will be reversed.
In other words, rename the open file to closed and the closed file to open.
-
Quicker to get component cable and a tv box to vga.
I get 720 on Coin Ops this way and the box runs off 5v 500ma.

The cable works fine. I have verified that with my modchipped xbox and Frosty's VGA patched BIOS.

Okay, that's good to know.

I'm not looking for alternatives. I'm asking for help with something that should work but isn't for whatever reason.

OK good luck.

Well as stated before it was a crap shoot, it worked on some setups fine and others it didnt.
At this point it could be a software issue or hardware.
He did state that the splintercell softmod was recommended for the initial soft mod...
I used the splintercell mod, dual boot vga, xbox to vga coupler...Some monitors cool others got the ugly screen, using the same setup.
That softmod is so finicky, anything could throw it off. I stopped using it, it may work better with hardmodded machines, the softmods were less stable....
So a few things, it not liking your softmod, your monitor or your cord....It's conflicting somewhere...

It appears you can do this natively without the software/firmware.
You have to change to NTSC and use the component cable and build one of these:
http://pictures.xbox-scene.com/2/vga-cable/image007.png (http://pictures.xbox-scene.com/2/vga-cable/image007.png)
http://www.xboxscene.com/articles/vga-cable.php (http://www.xboxscene.com/articles/vga-cable.php)
Which, not wanting to sound like I am repeating myself....this is the same method how I got 720p on the Xbox via a converter for about $30.00 ::)

Nope that requires a modified bios. Component and RGB are different, Frostys bios/softmod are required to change the signal to RGB, the lm1881 is needed to strip the sync from the green.
-
what is the monitor make and model your trying it on and does it have component in?
