If someone finds this one I will be amazed as it is a faint, but great, memory in my brainsicles
I believe that it was on the NES....
It was a top down view (like zelda or pokemon, more like zelda though)....
Not sure what the story was about....
You had an inventory, had like a raft to cross little bits of water....
Something noteworthy, it didn't have save games but rather it has a ---smurfing--- ridiculously long code you had to write down and keep somewhere every-time you wanted to turn the thing off! I mean really long, like three or four lines across the screen....
It was very difficult....
I remember you had to complete certain tasks, or maybe collect stuff??? to get to the next area....
The game was pretty grimm if I remember correctly (which I never do)....
I can't remember what kind of weapons you had, if any at all....
I think it was set in the present, well the present then....
I will try to come up with more things in the game, right now I am drawing a blank. Keep in mind this is something from my early childhood so it is very faint now....
I will up the anty as well, whomever figures this one out I will give them a coupon for a free serial plate when I run another production....
-
I was never fond of games like the one you mention but had a friend who was, so these guesses are based entirely on seeing the games played rather than doing so myself.
Dragon Warrior
or
Crystalis
-
Star Tropics?
-
All negative so far guys.
It wasn't bright like those games, it was a darker game, I think....
The sounds weren't as cheerful either, I think....
This is a game I have struggled to find in my head for many, many years.
-
Neutopia I/II had the raft, and the ridiculously long password, and discrete worlds with objectives...but it was TG-16
-
It is a haze I am telling ya, like I was drugged with scopolamine or somethin....
I am sure that there was a car or two some point in the game. You cant drive it but it is junked up or something....maybe
I am almost certain it was NES as I didn't have any other consoles that could be used on a TV at that age, I think....
-
I feel this difficulty is way over 9000 so I am raising the stakes once more. Whoever guesses the game gets a Serial Plate and gets to choose another forum member to give a second plate to (they must already have a build in progress or finished).
-
Linus Spacehead's Cosmic Crusade - had a password and a raft at one small point but was not a Top down player (only in map mode).
-
Holy trippy. Not that game sorry. It was only top down.
-
Robowarrior?
-
Not even close....
It was a very long RPG....
But it didn't have a world map, and wasn't vibrant at all....
I remember it being very gritty, like....grrr, it is on the tip of my brain!!! It is driving me nuts, like I hit a wall.
Guess I need to upgrade my grey matter :banghead:
-
I am extremely bored at work and nothing else to do so this has been keeping me busy.
Try this (http://www.listal.com/list/rpg-world-NES-edition)list and let me know if any jog your memory or can add to some more details.
-
Legend Of Zelda? >:D
-
No dice....and no not zelda. ;)
None of those are like the game. There are no houses you can enter....I don't think so anyways....
Hmmm, wish I could think of more. But the more I try the more it pisses me off.
-
Okay after looking around I found the game Star Tropics. I could be wrong but that is my true guess. I remember that Sword of Hope on the Gameboy had the same stupid save feature where you had to write down a book so you could restart in the same spot. Loved that game but it was such a ridiculous feature. I also found this post (http://www.gamespot.com/forums/topic/27425528) on Gamespot. Hopefully it helps.

was it one of the Ys games
ys 1 ancient ys vanished:

ys 2 ancient ys vanished - the final chapter:
EDIT: actually i just noticed the game Ys is in the bottom of the big list from 05SRT4's link posted above
ps. could it be a master system game? one of these games: http://www.retrogames.co.uk/default/off/category/Sega/Master_System/Adventure_and_RPG (http://www.retrogames.co.uk/default/off/category/Sega/Master_System/Adventure_and_RPG)
-
There is an RPG type game that is set in "modern times" called Earthbound.
-
Mission Impossible?
-
Nope nope nope nope nope....
I don't think there were swords, it wasn't medieval days either....
I think there was a car at one point, and a city, but not like a ton of buildings, you were in an alley of sorts....
This is killing me..........................
-
I'm 30% sure it was either Um Jammer Lammy on the PSOne or Call of Duty BlackOps. You're probably just misremembering.
Dude, bonus points to you for coming up with such a stumper.
-
Just found it! It was really big in Japan. It had a small release in the US. A loose translation was "CoryBee Smokes Out Of A Crackpipe and Has A Bad Trip." :laugh2: Whoever gets this definitely deserves a free serial plate.
-
Spelunker??? :dunno Even if I'm wrong I really enjoy these "What game is it" posts. I find some real 'jewels' when I'm looking. ;D
-
Pissed that Misson Impossible wasn't it!
Hard as hell? Check!
Grundgy color pallette? Check!
Raft? Check!
Present day? Check!
Top Down Perspective? Check!
Codes for levels? Check!
That's it *breaks out list of all 709 new games *
-
This doesn't match most criteria you set up, but I am gonna guess Adventures of Lolo because you rafted on bubbles.
-
Sega Genesis
Immortal
-
Okay as long as we're rattling stuff off...
What about Fun House? or Isolated Warrior?
Cory, I've scoured nintendo nerds, I'm starting to think that if none of these are it that it might not be on the NES platform buddy.
-
None of those are even close sorry....
I had access to a Sega Genesis back in those days, but I remember playing this one a lot so it had to be on the NES....Maybe....
Also I haven't touched the pipe, in like 20 minutes....
Top down guys, not sideways!....
large area on the screen, like I think you can see a bunch of the level on the screen if you know what I mean. Hmmmm, ---fudgesicle---....
-
Final Fantasy. :P
-
fortunately for you there is much less top down on the Genesis... I'm finding that ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---...
-
first guess, Crackdown..
-
Haha, I love the enthusiasm :applaud:
Just wish I could come up with more info about the game, has been over 12 years since I even thought about it let alone played it....
I believe it had good graphics for an NES game as the ones you guys suggested, then again I was really young and it was new to me so....
-
Ghost Lion?
Little Ninja Brothers?
-
Legend of the Ghost Lion
-
as long as I'm throwing it against the wall....
Red Zone (genesis)
Herzog Zwei (genesis)
-
.
-
It better not be Back to the Future, Die Hard, or the Bill and Ted game... Surely you'd remember those.
-
I think there was a car at one point, and a city, but not like a ton of buildings, you were in an alley of sorts....
River City Ransom? Not top-down nor features a raft to cross water, but is a modern day-setting beat-em-up w/ RPG elements, inventory, and multi-line password saves.
-
Bro here are the only other top downs hastily pulled from Louis Tully's screenshots, filtered for what's already been guessed, and what you've adamantly said it wasn't (fantasy RPG, etc)
Adventures in the Magic Kingdom
Adventures of Dino Riki
Alien Syndrome
Arkista's Ring
Back to the Future
Bill and Ted's Excellent Video Game Adventure
Biohazard
Blaster Master
Commando
Dash Galaxy in the ALien Asylum
Deadly Towers
Dick Tracy
Die Hard
Dragon Power
Fester's Quest
Gargoyles Quest II
Gremlins 2
Guerrilla War
Gunsmoke
Heavy Barrell
Ikari III The Rescue
Ikari Warriors
Ikari Warriors II
Indiana Jones and the temple of doom
Jurassic Park
Kung FU Heros
Last Ninja, the
Mad Max
Marvel's X-Men
Metal Gear
Mutant Virus
Robin Hood Prince of Theives
Snakes Revenge
Solstice
None of them IMHO are better matches than Mission Impossible....
-
Except for the passwords it kind of sounds like Shadowrun for SNES.
-
there is also a very different version of Shadowrun on the Genesis.... But still no codes...
-
Metal Gear? or look at Spiritual Warfare for the NES, fits a lot of description, and there is a raft.

DING DING DING!!!! WE HAVE A WINNER!!!!
You guys never cease to amaze me
My brain is being raped with neurons firing that haven't been used in over a decade, it is a wonderful feeling (has nothing to do with acid I may or may not have taken for breakfast)
Spiritual Warfare - NES Gameplay (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvGcLsg_ajw#)
-
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo
Ned Flanders approved....
-
I had no idea the game was religious based, that is odd. Also holy bombs and pears......
I use to love that game too, so many memories. I...I think I love you Strago....
-
It's a Wisdom Tree game. Probably explains why so few knew it ;D
(Also, not an RPG :P )
-
I feel sorry for your childhood...

Oh wow, I don't remember ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- like that from the game. That is weird....
I am impressed that someone got it though, that one was a doozy.

Don't forget to request your Serial Plate via PM
-
I can see it know when Corybee was growing up with his kid friends.....
"Spiritual Warfare.......Really........... I am calling my mom, this sleepover is lame!!!!"
-
Spiritual Warfare? Thats interesting....? :dunno
-
Some context might be in order. Even though my mother tried to push religious bull on us like having us go to an after school Christian daycare. The game wasn't bought for this purpose. We would go to the thrift store and grab a bunch of NES games for cheap and I guess that was one of them. I discovered Zelda this way as well now that I think about it.
:dunno
-
Yea, the main thing I googled was games with long password features. There are actually not that many. Will pm after work sometime.

Noah's Ark 3D for SNES was a stretch:
Super 3D Noah's Ark (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVvPppPovkM#)
There was also a Noah's Ark game for NES where you had to collect two of every animal, but there were snakes you should be collecting and snakes that kill you. :lol
-
Oh my god a religious version of doom.....
-
There was also a Noah's Ark game for NES..................
and there was a Noah's Arcade for Wayne's World

Oh my god a religious version of doom.....
me thinks that ran on the Wolfenstein Engine.

I remember seeing a youtube video where the guy said the Nintendo refused to approve Wolfenstein 3D because of the gore, so the company that was making it sold it to the religious company. I searched for Wolfenstein 3D for the SNES and it looks like it was released, so I thought maybe the story was BS.
-
Yeah, according to wiki, its an urban legend. Not that wiki is the "know all end all" on these things, but I'm guessing it is right. The most it said was that ID was aware the game would not be licensed by Nintendo when they sold rights to the Wolfenstein 3d engine to Wisdom tree.
-
That noah's ark game was hilarious. :lol
baaaa!
