Title: My CrapMame Submission : Half-Fighting / Half-Racing Cab
Post by: SegaOutrun on July 20, 2013, 07:52:20 pm
I know this wont be everyone's cup of tea but, I had a blast making it and playing it. Personally I think I did well for only having used spare wood and a powered handsaw.

We originally wanted to have an outdoor Tv and Sound System but, I decided to go few steps further. That's the reason it doesn't have a bezel, the Tv can be pulled out and angled any way want to watch Tv outside.

PARTS
1.Empty Cabinet from Craigslist (It had a tekken tag marquee but, I found older unknown artwork on the inside so, fear not purist, I did not cut up a classic)
2.32" Sharp TV from Craigslist
3.TV mount from Craigslist
4.(2) WWE Brawl Fighting stick from Amazon ( A bad decision, I tried saving money but the buttons sucked and I replaced them with sanwa buttons)
5.Logitech Momo Steering wheel on Craigslist
6.Bright red T-molding gamemolding.com
7.Ebay vinyl for the CP
8.Custom Sideart and Marquee from Gameongraphix
9.Comp Power supply for the speakers, fans and Marquee light
10.Logitech k400 wireless keyboard at walmart
11.ACTLABS RS Shifter
12. EMS Top Gun III
13. Cup holder from the 99c store
14.PS2 LED trackball
15.RGB Led strip
Reused wood laying around in the garage
Reused a spare media PC (phenom II x4 945, 3gb, SSD and radeon 4550)
Reused car speakers and 10" sub

Widen the cab to fit the large screen.

Added the artwork

Added the CP

Added Mood Lighting (Remote controlled RGB LED Strip

Added cupholders, bottle opener and painted the Tv black
(http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/pp33/superrama0/20130619_220357.jpg)

THEN... I wasn't satisfied with how big my CP was and how the Wheel looked like it was just tacked on so, I decided to redo the CP.

1. I shaved off the xbox buttons (Start/Select/Home) and replaced them with real arcade buttons
2. I added the shifter becuase Daytona USA wasnt as fun without it.
3. I added a PS2 Trackball. I went the cheap route because A) Im cheap and B) there only like 5 trackball games I like so, no need to spend $90 for that
4. I shaved off about 2" off the CP and 3" from the CP box for more knee room
5. Integrated the Steering Wheel into the CP better

Ya know, if you jack that steering wheel right up as far as you can get it to the screen and then put your P1 and P2 controls just on either side of it not at an angle it really wouldn't be half bad.  You'd have to lose the trackball or move it to a plug and play panel via a front mount usb port.  The lack of a bezel does hurt the look but a judicious use of black paint would help that too.  You've got some good bones there really, just need to work the kinks out if you're so inclined.

PS, I dig the beadart.

I'll give you credit for one thing- you knew what you wanted to build going in to it, and that's what you built. It's much better than feature creep syndrome, where people just add stuff for the sake of it as they go along. Props to you for staying true to what you wanted!

That is an awesome build. I have been considering building a wheel into MAME cabinet. That was a brilliant way to incorporate it and still be able to play a bunch of other games.

it's pretty darn good for your limited toolset... only thing I'd change is  I'd lose the trackball because it's pretty useless right there.  Also I'd throw a plexi bezel over the screen to hide the TV's logos...  Done...  Far from Crapmame worthy!

It's definitely a bit different but I think it kinda works. I do agree though that the trackball seems useless there.

But the Subject of this thread is misleading. This is not a crap mame thing.

Come on, get Real.   This could and would have been blasted, had this been available at the time of the crapsite creation.

If this guy wouldnt have self-degraded his own work.. you all would have been pelting rocks as usual.

And thats the point.  This guy couldnt even post without mention of the site.. because of the negative impact it has made.
You simply have to self degrade to post.  If you dont, people think your bragging.. or even just simply content / satisfied... and then your open fodder.

Segaoutrun,  while there are some flaws and things that could be improved..  I think its great you posted and are enjoying the hobby.  :)

I usually dont post criticisms of a finished project. (as then its too late anyways.  Even now, Im not being specific)  I only posted in such a way this time, as a way to make people Think about the words, attitudes, and actions, that have caused you to put such a negative title, in your submission posting...  Which is sad.

The experience and growth in skills is all part of the fun.
Enjoy, and be proud of your accomplishments.
  :)

Who are you talking to?  DaOld Man, MGB, Unstupid, Mr. Wilson, Hex, Yot, or me?  Be clear in your accusations  :tool:

Thanks for dragging a long row of positive comments through the mud and creating another thread about you, ya --cream-filled twinkie--.

Great cab, it sounds like it shouldn't work but it really does - the wheel and joystick placements look fantastic - Enjoy the cab!

this isnt just about me.  This is about an entire group of people already effected, and who continue to be reminded and effected every time some jerk pops the subject up again, to make more negative comments at their expense.

As well as it being about people like this man...  and its about the negative environment that the Bullying has caused.   The effect has carried out to this poster.. just like many other project posters and non-posters, because of that negativity.

The post is very relevant, and should be something everyone should consider.  Everyone is whom I wrote this for, and its written for the hopeful benefit of others, to make the realizations, that mockery and negative bashings, are damaging and bad for the entire community.

You're such a wannabe martyr... way to shuck and jive away from the question, who were you refering to by saying "you all"?  Your passive aggressive bullying is disgusting.

Segaoutrun,  while there are some flaws and things that could be improved..

LIBEL!

Sorry for the derailing, I couldnt resist. The cab still looks odd just because the controls and monitor are offset to one side, but I can see why you didnt center them, it'd be a giant pain in the gonands. Cant argue with the end result though, it looks like it plays great!

Had to pull out that old jewel.

Anyway....I like your cab.  The side art is so sharp I would like to see you pull it all together.  Lose the S. Fighter characters and completely redo it as a Out Run cab.  Artwork and all...By the way...I think you need to invite me over for a cold one so we can rock that bad boy of a cab.  Haven't been able to play a good racing game in awhile.

Look at the front porch on this ---maternal-smurf--- ! ;D

I know he plays the hell out of driving games on it which he wouldn't be able to do if it were the standard 2P CP that everyone else does.
It's far better to have something you use and enjoy.

If you've ever played on a cab with a screen that big, you'll have more of an appreciation for the joystick placement.

Unfortunately, I think less and less of you every time I read your posts, my friend.  Please don't punch me in the teeth with your Internet fists of fury for saying that.

You know this isn't CrapMame-ish? Like I said, he knew what he wanted- he wanted to play racing games in a racing cab, but he added fightsticks to play fighters as well. He doesn't have a SW yoke, or tons of haphazzardly-pasted artwork, or anything like that. He didn't plaster photos of a 'roided out Ryu getting ready to fight a constipated Hulk on the marquee. He had a vision, and he stuck with it. It looks like an arcade cabinet- I can't/won't fault him for that.

Umm, plenty of people knew what they wanted, whos cabs are on the crapmame site.   The issue is not what they wanted... but what other people felt about that, and how it looked and functioned overall.

Im not about to be baited into why this would have been put there.  Let Howard and or Eric tell you if want to hear it.

He doesn't have a SW yoke,

What does a Starwars yoke have to do with something being crap?   And how does a PC steering wheel that hasnt been De-Cased trump a Starwars yoke?   A specialty controller is a specialty controller.   There are some people here who cant accept a trigger stick on a panel, and try to force people away from putting one in.. even though the person states that games like Tron and Mad Planets are their favorites to play.   All because these people dont like the Look of one.. and or dont care about those games.

Others will slam you for putting more than 2 types of controllers on a panel.   In that case, they say you should have made two separate swappable panels.   Yet, thats a mere Opinion.  Especially if you dont like to spend your time swapping things around.

Im not stating anything new.  This stuff is On the cm site, as well having people blabbing about this stuff all over Byoac constantly.

Quote
or tons of haphazzardly-pasted artwork, or anything like that. He didn't plaster photos of a 'roided out Ryu getting ready to fight a constipated Hulk on the marquee.

I dont think any CM spots got such things on it.  This is your opinion, and I share that opinion in regaurds to artistic design.  I just dont openly slam people over it, nor dedicate a website for slamming people over it.

Quote
He had a vision, and he stuck with it. It looks like an arcade cabinet- I can't/won't fault him for that.

Who are you to fault him for anything?  Its his creation, for him to enjoy as he pleases.  And thats the point.  If it makes him happy.. then why crush his spirit over it?  Why make people like this fearful to even post it, thinking they could be the next in line to be pasted on the CM site?

And why does it have to Look like an Arcade machine to keep from being crap?  (not that any arcade machine Ive seen has dual bats and a wheel)    Plenty of people have built control panels in coffee tables.   Or even stand-alone / travel-panels.  The point being, they can play the games they enjoy however they like to play them.

You can Hate on me all you want.. but it wont change the facts.

Crapmame has created a Negative effect in this community, and this is Proof of that.

And no..  Its not mine, nor is it some kind of set-up.  (as If Ive got that kind of free-time!)
Maybe the title came from the very fact that he had been reading the new CM thread... and felt the need to self depreciate, as a result.  Maybe it came as a result of the original.  Maybe it came from the many re-posts of it.  But regardless, its a result of it period.

Hey X2, if I get enough people to raise a big enough stink about how we think you have a negative impact on the community will you go away...or can we let legal free speech be?  Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's not a right of others to say it.  Coversely you have the same right to be the dooshnugget you are as I have to be the dooshnugget I am.

I really can't get through too many of x2s posts. They just seem to go on forever with a lot of dribble.

So if we critique a cab, we're jerks and if we compliment a cab, we're liars.

This cab here is not what I would choose to build but I think he did a decent job on the balance between fighter and driver.
Besides the picture of it outside on a porch at night reminds me of the last star fighter.
