Never mind on this, I am going the XBOX route.

I am going to get one of these I think, heard there were issues with grounding for controls though, so still figuring that out.

Either that or do a gamepad hack and use an "xbox vga cable to arcade monitor" board like this

+

(Posted wrong type of vga cable)

I think I will go with the latter as I heard interesting things about the chinese jamma issues on the first board I posted.

If you buy RGB scart cables for your consoles, then this is really good: http://etim.net.au/scart2arcV20/scart2arc2.htm (http://etim.net.au/scart2arcV20/scart2arc2.htm)

Dreamcast to jamma? Why not just get a VGA box, snip the 31Hz wire, and wire up a couple of controller hacks?

I am going the xbox route now, but I thought of that and didn't want to pay the $ for it.

I realized in my first post I posted an xbox 360 vga cable.....I cant find one for orig xbox...---steaming pile of meadow muffin---

So guys, how would you go about it?  Turning an orig xbox into an arcade "board" that will replace a Marvel vs Capcom board in an arcade cabinet.

I basically just need the xbox to output to the arcade monitor without much hassle. With parts that are in the USA.

I can take care of pad hacking some controllers and providing an amp for the sound.

Here is one option for the xbox.

http://www.ultimarc.com/xba.html (http://www.ultimarc.com/xba.html)

Quote
The X-Box Adaptor converts the output from the I-PAC (must be in PS/2 keyboard mode) into XBox commands.

Ultimarc no longer makes dreamcast adaptors.  :o

http://www.ultimarc.com/dreamcast.html (http://www.ultimarc.com/dreamcast.html)

Dreamcast to JAMMA Adaptor
Includes a sync separator circuit
This adaptor is also the correct type for use with multi-frequency monitors which have a VGA plug (eg W-G D9500) These monitors should be connected direct to this adaptor in all cases, even if you have a J-PAC
Click To Order
To connect an PS to a JAMMA cabinet you need the following items:
D-C Controls Adaptor
D-C to J-PAC/Speaker Adaptor
J-PAC with PS/2 keyboard cable option. see our main order page for this item.
IMPORTANT INSTALLATION INSTRUCTION: When connecting this cable to the J-PAC you need to remove all of the frequency jumpers (ie 15, 25, 31) on the J-PAC, which allows all signals to pass through. Only later J-PAC boards have this facility. On older J-PAC boards you will need a replacement chip to enable this function. Please email for details.

The picture below shows a complete console to JAMMA setup.

Will the j-pac handle all of this?

I have made a cable before from a scart cable.   The ones from US often are not fully wired and thus do not have all the conductors necessary.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/RGB-Scart-Cable-for-Sega-Dreamcast-Saturn-Super-Nintendo-Gamecube-DC-SNES-XBOX-/161034622565

of course, it is also possible to solder directly to the output header, and if this is to be installed in a cab where it will remain static, motion/weak joints is less a concern.

Xbox diy is amore affordable alternate to the ultimarc stuff

the xbox version isnt anywhere near as good as the DC version though, just like the PS2 version the xbox version is missing a TON of frames. g'luck with it though

The XBox picture will be interlaced as well, as it can only output 480i, not 240p. Get hold of a real RGB scart cable for your DC, then do this:

What do you mean exactly? I watched this and there are subtle differences but nothing drastic....

I had this super long reply typed up but I couldn't understand it. There's just less frames of animation on PS2/XBOX. If you're used to the DC/Arcade the timing is going to be off when you play XBOX/PS2 , if you play XBOX/PS2 enough then the timing is going to feel off when you go back to DC/Arcade. The DC version is just better  :)

Try and get it running in Makaron and see if you can score a PC that will run it full speed.
Makaron isn't quite as demanding as Demul.
IIRC, I had it running full speed on a 2.8Ghz Athlon X2 with 8600GT video card.

Well it is already set in stone now. I really appreciate the input. What I understand is, don't play one and then the other or you wont like it :D

I got already have the xbox, ordered 2 controllers & the game, convinced him to get rid of the arcade monitor for an LCD screen so no need for input to that. Also get the old hardware, monitor + gameboard with jamma harness.

Cheers!

I honestly don't know what to do with the monitor and game board....

Should I build a cabinet from it? My first actual arcade with arcade parts....

Should I part out the board and thermite the monitor (joking), I imagine not many people would want to pay shipping on a beast like that....

Build an actual jamma cab with the parts and you will be ready for any real jamma boards that turn up.

This would be hard to do on-the-cheap, if he's looking to get MvC2 running...
He'd have to get a full Naomi set-up + the cart...which in total would probably run him over $300 at today's prices.

Honestly, getting a DC connected to a cabinet is easier than an XBOX.

For one, a VGA box can be had fairly cheap -- I paid $35 a little while back. The 15khz mod is really easy to pull off, it's just a matter of cutting a wire (or attaching a switch to it - in case you wanna still use it for 31khz monitors).
Also, DC controllers are much easier to hack, they have common-grounds and the solder points are more accessible than the XBOX.

I've got both with the ability to connect it to any Jamma wired cabinet. I went the Jpac route with my XBOX, which required me to buy a Jpac from Ultimarc, the controller interface, and the xbox A/V interface.
Luckily I have a dual-sync monitor in both my Jamma cabinets, so I'm able to run my XBOX without having to force a 15khz enabled firmware through it.  But this setup still cost me over $150 to get going.

For my DC, I first started off with a VGA box and 2 hacked controllers (courtesy of Haruman's lovely hacking handy-work) wired to a Jamma edge connector.  But I've scrapped that now that the PS360+'s support DC controls. I modded my DC to output VGA using shadow's VGA board (http://www.neo-geo.com/forums/showthread.php?240701-IC-Dreamcast-VGA-board), and now I run it directly into my Jamma box interface (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,112512.msg1213310.html#msg1213310) that has 2x PS360+'s and a UVC (<--- VGA input, converts a highres signal to work with 15khz / 24khz monitors).

In fact, I now use my Jamma Box with my XBOX (via Neoya X2VGA+) as well as XBOX360/PS3 and DC. Not the cheapest option for a console interface, but its a really robust one.

I was thinking of making a dedicated MVC cab but I really have no use for that as I have it on all my mame cabs.....

Size, not sure

You could build a generic JAMMA lowboy (two player) or recreate a Gauntlet type cabinet for 4 players and dedicate it to the two Dungeons & Dragons games from CAPCOM (what I would wanna do, but I can't  :badmood: ). Both ideas would turn out great I'm sure, but the latter would need more attention to detail.
