Inspired by Griff's "A Barrel of Kong" (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,131202.0.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,131202.0.html)), I'm going to attempt making one for a mate, he saw a photo on the net somewhere and hit me up to make him one!
The plan is to build cocktail cabinet control panels, slightly tweaked to fit in the barrel with a 60-in-1 vertical board running the standard JAMMA interface.
I'll post costing's and where I sourced the parts within Australia if anyone's interested in having a go themselves.
Once again a huge thanks to Griff for his awe-inspiring creation!

Careful there! Griff may have trademarked the whole "Barrel of Kong" idea. Might I suggest a slightly 'different' inspiration?

Nice one Rick, you managed to derail the project thread in the first reply. :lol Do they have KFC's in Australia?

Dammit! Now I'm going to have Ond come down on me.
;)
Sorry, holdennut. I - am - excited to see what you're going to do! I can say that after Griff's design, even I was considering a barrel-themed Kong cab.
-
Haha, yeah all good guys!
Have checked with Griff before I posted and he's cool with it, will have my own "Aussie touch" to it anyway...
The barrels have arrived and the buttons board etc have been ordered. Getting stung a bit on price compared to the prices you guys get in the US...
Paid $120 for the barrel and the best price on glass so far came in at $160
-
Would the Aussie touch involve Foster's beer and a Kegerator :lol
-
Vigo, you should build a Snacks N' Jaxon out of a KFC bucket.
-

No real Aussie drinks Fosters.

Always wondered about that.

Nice, just saw this. Gotta be VB in the Kegerator!!
-
Hmm, a VB keg is a good idea!
Yeah no-one drinks Fosters in Australia, in-fact I think the pommies bought it off us anyways!

Holy cow! I think you can get both of those for under $100 if you take your time and look around here in the US. Ouch.
Good luck - the original cab is an incredible concept. Good luck with your take on it.
-
A beer keg is a lot easier to get around my way than a wine barrel is. I have thought about putting Tapper in a beer keg...

Moar ideas like this!!
Snax and Jackson inside a dead clown's carcas
-
A beer keg wouldn't be big enough, an asteroid on the other hand is do-able for sure!
Been a bit slack this week but have drawn up the CP side template in PacMan style.

Moar ideas like this!!

[/John Wayne Gacy] :puke
As requested, moar ideas:
- LEGO Tetris cab.
- Bubbles in a sink.
- Frogger (or racing game) in a tire.
- Golden Tee in a golf bag/stand -- connect to big screen TV.
- TMNT in a stack of pizza boxes/delivery bags -- controls covered by the delivery bag flap when not in use.

All this mocking but Le Chuck has pulled off the idea of having an arcade in something other than a cab here (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,121700.0.html) with impeccable taste.

Not quite -- that's a lego Pac-Man cab. >:D
There's no Tetris games on the XX-in-1 boards AFAIK -- you'd have to use a 138-in-1. ;D

There was an aussie guy that used to make and sell arcade machines in a barrell pretty much exactly like this. Last one I think he sold on ebay for $810 in 2011. But I'm sure he was making them as far back as 2007.
-
Got a bit busy on the weekend!
Removed the barrel lid first up to be greeted by the beautiful smell of rotten wine!
Screwed down the barrel hoops either side of the cut lines to ensure things all stayed together nicely after it was cut.
Cut out a basic template to hold everything together and ensure the barrel cuts were correct. Maximus was dead on about how hard it is to judge the vertical cuts, the cuts all feel wrong...
All sitting in place nicely, now the wait for 2 control panels to be cut and folded...
-
Wow! Your woodworking skills are top notch! Looks great so far.
-
What he said!
:applaud:
-
Looking good!
-
Nice, congrats on getting those cuts right, they will save you a lot of messing around later trying to shim them tight like I had to do.
-
Maximus, I've learnt a lot from your build and measured my cuts so many times it had to be right!
Been playing around with CP layouts and think this will be my final before getting them machined up! The last cocktail I built had them too close together for my big fingers so have spaced it all out a bit more this time.
PDF attached.
-
Looking perfect thus far.
I see more of these barrel builds coming in the future, being refined each time.
I have absolutely no use for it, but if I come across a barrel cheap I won't be able to resist building one.
EDIT: Check with your local wineries for barrels. Once all the flavor has been leeched out of the wood, they aren't of use to them anymore.
My girlfriend will be excited to go wine tasting. She doesn't need to know why.
-
+ 1 on the barrel addiction :afro:
-
Kick in the pants bump for progress photos ;D
-
Question about the barrel itself. Doesn't the thing stink forever? Just curious if it STINKS or if it's a pleasant smell.
AJ
-
I couldn't smell mine unless I stuck my head inside it, even then I kinda liked the smell of the red wine and wood, I guess it depends what has been made in there.
-
So probably not best to use a compost barrel. :dunno
-

Sure, if your project is going to be called 'Barrel of Dung'.
-
Ah yes, progress shots!
I've been a bit held up waiting for the control panels to be machined. They finally arrived last week and look pretty sweet even in their bare state!
As for the smell, yeah I kinda like the smell from my barrel too!. Can't imagine there would be much once the top is done though...
-
Finally a bit of clear weather and some progress!
Mounted up the control panels and recessed the screen.
A little more contact and t-moulding then it's time to start the wire-up!
-

...
These X-in-1 boards. Can just buy these boards and solder some wires on them, or buy a socket where you solder wires? Or do you need an old original JAMMA board..?
Can't wait to see the end result! The control/monitor module looks great!

The X-in-1 boards are JAMMA boards that illegally use an old version of MAME. (Don't ask for links/vendors -- see rule 5 here (http://arcadecontrols.com/arcade_message_rules.html). :police:)
The edge connector plugs into a standard JAMMA harness that you can get from numerous vendors including Bob Roberts, Paradise Arcade, etc.

That's all I need to know. Thanks :D

More that 120 days later...
Finally finished building myself a new garage and really need to get this project finished!
Fitted up the main console and confirmed a nice snug fit.
Added two programming buttons under the CP to control the game board without having to open up the barrel.
Fitted the remote speaker volume control down by the power switch.
Next up I'll fit the speakers and cut out a top board to cover all the workings.

What are those two buttons for marked T & S? They look like the two red buttons on the original Barrel of Kong next to his amplifier. Cheers.
-
Their for programing the game board.
-
Cut out the top bezel last night, what a tedious job that was!
Also marked out and cut the speaker holes. The plan is to mount a pair of Logitech 2.1's to the side of the main chassis with the small sub in the belly of the barrel.

Another quick question, the thing above your power switch, is that a filter?
-

Looks like it is a volume control box for the speakers as well as a headphone jack.
-

Yep, it's the volume/headphone block from a set of Logitech speakers. I'm using a similar set for my Flynn's build (logitech LS21 to be exact)
-
looking good holdennut, just wondering where you found that toggle power swith? .......the only ones ive found so far are from china ebay :dunno
thanks mate

Think this is exactly what I was looking for in my thread on the main forum. :notworthy:
I want to add a headphone jack to my cab but wasn't sure how to.
So I take it this is wired between the board and the speakers? Do you have a wiring diagram if so?
Cheers!
-
GrandBofTarkin, it's actually a part of the Logitech speaker set, see this link; http://www.logitech.com/en-au/product/ls21-speakers (http://www.logitech.com/en-au/product/ls21-speakers) Great little set of speakers!
stavros693000, I got my power socket/switch from a company called Jaycar. Here's the link; http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=PP4003 (http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=PP4003)
-
Do you have a fuse installed anywhere?
-
GrandBofTarkin, there's a fuse in with the switch/power socket.
-
Mounted the speakers up to the main console and lined up with the top speaker cut-outs.
Looking neat and tidy now, should project the sound out of the barrel just nicely.
Not always getting sound out unfortunately, might have to ditch the 60-in-one board for a PC...

thanks mate but i have one like that, i was hoping to find one like yours , exactly like yours eg...same shape, screw on etc.
thanks cheers 8)

Woops sorry mate, I must have got it from In2Amusements when I got the other components...
http://in2amusements.com.au/audio-power-and-lighting/ac-entry-fused-with-illuminated-toggle/ (http://in2amusements.com.au/audio-power-and-lighting/ac-entry-fused-with-illuminated-toggle/)
This IS the exact one I'm using!
-
A bit of black paint and it's all starting to come together now!
Also dropped 4 small screws in the corners to hold it all in place.
-
Finally finished messing around with the artwork (thanks spaceclown). Pretty happy with the mock-up despite all the A4 page joins :D Keen to see what it looks like when it comes back from my printing people!
Also had a go at blacking out one of the joystick bolts with a paint pen, should look a lot tidier than the bare metal bolt heads!
The glass top I ordered should be here any day now too...
-
Looks great!
-
Good stuff man, looking very nice!!

Hey I decided to use the exact same speaker system as you. How did you mount them to the sides of your controls box?
-
Just 2 little wood screws through the side.
Just screw the top one (near the speaker) as high as possible or use a shorter screw so you don't go through the actual speaker!
This picture should give you a better idea...
-
Perfect thanks. :afro:
-
Glass and artwork have finally arrived, it's all coming together now!
Really not happy with the 60-in-1 board, will probably be pulling that out next to be replaced with a PC running MALA.
-
OK so the 60-in-1 board had to go, just not happy with the menu and game quality! Makes the finished job feel really cheap...
I found an old dual core PC at the office, loaded up TinyXP, MALA and MAME. Got everything working just nice then stripped it all down and mounted it up in the centre console.
Had to order an Pac-Mini from the states to interface the computer and controls so grabbed a couple of their servo stick's while I was at it! So simple yet amazingly effective! Good being able to play both 8-way and 4-way games without having to change anything!
Also found some little clear rubber feet at Bunnings to sit the glass on. Sits nice now and their hardly noticeable.
-
looking good.
Im trying to find a barrel, they are not easy to come by, unless you want to pay 150-200 bucks for one.
