Title: Airflow - Looking for recommendation for intake vent/cover
Post by: bmo on July 11, 2013, 12:49:28 pm
I'm in the final stages of my cocktail cabinet and have a fan blowing air out of the cabinet but I can't find anything good for air intake vents and covers. It doesn't have to be very big (maybe ≤100mm) but I'd like it to be something that could keep dirt/dust coming inside the cabinet to a minimal. Any recommendations? Can't seem to find anything at Fry's or Home Depot in my area. Maybe some other hardware place I'm not thinking of? Or online? Any tips would be great. Prefer to avoid plastic anything.. since I have dogs and kids around. Thanks!

Apparently pantyhose stretched over the air intake is very good as an air filter.  Your source of pantyhose may vary.

One from amazon that I have (http://www.amazon.com/Washable-Deluxe-Filter-Mounting-Included/dp/B007JWBXC6) thats not bad.  The filter material is the same stuff used for air conditioner filters (the large sheet you cut to size).  This kind snaps together so you can remove just the cover and filter leaving the fan attached to the cabinet.  My only complaint is it snaps together too well so sometimes it may be difficult to remove.

If you want something super easy to install checkout some of the magnetic filters amazon has.  I notice now you mention no plastic.  The filter above is plastic but not flimsy stuff whereas the magnetic filters might be metal since those honeycombs are thin (http://www.amazon.com/SilverStone-120mm-Filter-Grill-FF121/dp/B0036WTDHK/ref=pd_bxgy_pc_text_y/188-6639380-5869406).

Of course you can make your own if you have some dead power supplies.  Remove the fan grille from two and place an ac filter between the two, attach to fan with wood cabinet between filter/grille monstrosity and fan, and done.

I would just cut some slots like how the Nintendo donkey kong cabinet has their speaker holes cut. That's one of the cleanest solutions in my opinion. It doesn't stick out.
