Robocop
Rush'n'attack
Combat Tribes
NARC
Willow
Journey (finally got to hear the music)
Games I still need to finish:
Ghouls'n'Ghost
Shinobi
Scramble
anyone recognize the game from this screenshot? Just beat this the other night.

Looping!
Is it stable in MAME now? It randomly crashed in all versions I have tried, but it has been a long time since I ran a new build of MAME.
-
I am horrible game player, lol. I really am. But I love them all the same. I remember I got a 4th HighScore on Turbo once in the Milwaukee airport as a kid. Thats probably pretty sad.
As far as MAME, I pretty much only beat the games I can continue pounding in quarters to continue. Although I think I beat Spelunker and I don't think you can continue there.
Jumpman Jr. on Commodore 64 I could play for ever back in the day.
-
I used to play Looping all the time on my Coleco when I was a kid. It was aggravating at first, but once you got the hang of it, it was fun. Never saw an arcade version of it though.
Looks like I know what I'm going to do this morning....
Edit:
Ugh. The Y axis is opposite compared to on Coleco. On Coleco Y was inverted (push down to fly up). In MAME its normal (push up to fly up). Years of playing it with an inverted axis on Coleco have made it impossible for me to play it on MAME.

Yes! Looping it is. I pulled it up in the latest version and it plays great! It has some sound issues, but it doesn't crash anymore. FWIW, Gorf now plays good too. No more slow downs.
I first saw it in the 80's at a bowling alley. I only played it a few times because it was hard for me to control as a kid and I didn't want to waste my money. It was nice to finally "beat" it.
-
I don't think there was too many games that you couldn't "beat" without pumping in enough quarters to get through a game. Of course most people couldn't afford to make it through a game if they sucked at it ;). Most of the games that only let you play so far on a quarter were strictly high score type games that you couldn't really beat.
If there were such games, they were rare.

"if there were such games" :lol
Some games were endless - sure. Some games were endless but ended after certain technical limitations (like Donkey Kong and Pacman). Lots of games were mission oriented like Rush'n'Attack, Robocop, Willow, Metal Slugs, Mortal Kombats, Street Fighters, Ghost'n'Goblins, Ghouls'n'Ghosts, tons of bullet time games, quarter pumpers like forgotten worlds, double dragons, bad dudes, lightgun games, and sports games.
Beatable arcade games were not rare.
-
Finishing most arcade games was simply a matter of how many quarters you wanted to pump into the thing, and how much time you have to play the machine. :)
Both of those elements are basically remove when you bring a machine home (or emulate one).
-
I can only think of the ones that I couldn't finish because I wouldn't pump the number of quarters it required to finish, but still:
Magic Sword
Willow
Terminator 2 (2p dropped out when I almost beat it as a kid, so when I died at the very end (in front of the molten metal container), I would have had to continue from earlier)
Double Dragon II
I always remember NES games being the ones that were, at times, ridiculously difficult due to good (if slightly cheap) design (Ninja Gaiden/II/III,Battletoads), or due to bad/horrible/wretched design (Silver Surfer, Double Dragon III, Fester's Quest).
-
Or Ghosts and Goblins... damn those games where

I knew I was forgetting a biggie! ;D
I like watching people who are good at it play... rather like DK and Pac-Man in that regard.

My only issue is Mame allows you to use as many coins as you like whereas in the arcade you had to be good .

Yeah, but to be honest, At this stage of my life I can afford to spend $5 on a video game if I wanted to. I've spent more building my arcade than I probably ever would spend in quarters. This is Mame, if part of the nostalgia for you was that the resource management aspect, than you are going to lose that with Mame. Some games lose all their challenge if you just pump quarters into it. Gauntlet for example. But other games, like Defender, will always be just as challenging.
You know, you can limit your credits. Just like you don't enable cheats or use save states.

You do realize you can invert your Y-axis in MAME so it works like the Coleco, right?

There are plenty of games where you have to be good to complete them *properly*
The Bubble Bobble series (inc. Rainbow Islands) is always a good example, for Rainbow Islands you'll only see half the game unless you play it properly!
Most of the Cave shooters have very strict requirements for fighting the last boss, usually involving no deaths, point targets etc.
There are others where continuing is disabled on the last level, or where you still have to be skilful on some parts if you want a good ending (last boss on Operation Thunderbolt..)
Simply credit feeding those games might get you an ending, but you really can't say you beat them because you won't have seen the real endings.

But then it's not authentic! ;D Yeah, I could remap up/down for Looping. But I've already seen and moved onto some other shiny object.

legends of makai was so good at the arcade but so impossible even in mame if you did not get all the letters and write them down. the first time i had most of the letters, i just used save states and tried all 26 letters for till i finally figured out the code. getting to x was almost impossible.

I never saw the arcade version of this game until around 2006. My only experience with it was on the ColecoVision, and I played the hell out of it. Going to to throw a newer version of MAME on my machine to try this again. I pretty much gave up on it ever being fixed.

How do I go about doing that?
I want to lock the amount of credits to a reasonable amount for each game . Keep it fun.

I like the ability to pause the game especially when I'm stuck in one of those insanely long queues at the supermarket. I can go back and finish off a level. New Zealand's story is a perfect example.

Is this really true on the real arcade version or is the default mapping in MAME just backwards (I automatically swapped the Y axis too, assuming it to be wrong)?
In the Looping article on the KLOV site it states, "The simplicity of the controls is what gives the game its biggest challenge since you only use up and down on the controller to dive or climb respectively and effectively loop." This would seem to indicate that the inverse (ColecoVision) mapping is correct.
Anyway, if no one is sure, I may be stopping by at ACAM at Funspot next week and will try to verify.
