Title: Stumped with trackball mount..
Post by: stigzler on June 13, 2013, 06:13:17 am
Did a bit of trawling, but the trackball mounts I've seen in posts seem to have some kinda flat faced mounting plate.

Picked up a t/ball from ebay for a song. Q is - how do I flush mount this into 1/2" MDF. Top of CP will be finished in black vinyl:

Thanks for any advice that can be offered.

Get a trackball mounting plate and use a router to inset it into the mdf cp.   Link (http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Trackball_Mounting)

You need this for that happs trackball..should be easy to source.. search the forum, someone created a mounting template for the holes..all you have to do is depth cut the height of the top plate into mdf insert into holes and you will have a flush mount tball....if you can't find one I have one I can sell you from the states...pm me if interested

The mounting you ordered is not what you want.  You want the one in the above post

These are awesome and they work straight out the box with 2 buttons. Preference but I don't like the look of standard trackballs.

Beauty of these is they look good and they can be plonked on top of your control panel or mounted. The ball comes out so cleaning is a breeze and they have 2 buttons built in and it works as a mouse. So Monkey Island etc. on ScummVM or anything else, it works great.

Does this trackball uses ball-bearings? If not, it is not recommended for Arcade games because of its high friction.

Yes. Under the ball. Works brilliantly and looks great.

No need to be pedantic. I have had trouble with trackballs myself. Its a solution I found works for me and I was trying to advise. I don't see the need to burn people who are trying to add to a conversation / help.

Curse the UK for parts!!!!

Some other states seller someone put me onto:

This is an interesting predicament.
I bought over half a dozen happ trackballs from a guy on KLOV for $6 apiece.
Thought it'd be easy to find the mount, but after a couple weeks of confusing emails with parts websites and a phone call with arcadeshop.....I friggin' gave up.

took a 1/4 inch piece of aspen wood...cut a 3 inch hole...cut a big hole in the panel so the trackball slipped in...routed the panel for the aspen board...and then bolted the trackball to the inlayed aspen wood.
works great.

it's silly you can't buy a simple retrofit trackball mounting kit out there.
apparently all trackballs back in the day were bolted to metal panels, like a centipede cabaret?

Hmmm... would really leave the "make your own" option until last!

Link above carried $50 shipping. Suzo Happ carries similar shipping costs + $10 surcharge on orders under $25. Suzo europe doesn't sell them!!

How rediculous. The UK sucks sometimes. Any UK builders found another supplier?? If not - how are you all mounting your trackballs!?
