I think most threads of this type are from guys trying to remember a game they saw in the 80’s or 90’s, but this one is simply for a game I discovered last year while randomly going through obscure MAME games. I enjoyed the game and wouldn’t mind playing it again but I can’t recall the name to save my life. The kicker is, I even maintain a “log” of games I discover in this way to prevent this very thing from happening, but I must have been too lazy that day to write it down.
Anyway, in a generic sense it was a side-scrolling beat-em-up, but rather than the trite “thugs on the street” theme, it was skinned in more of a “ghosts and goblins” aesthetic: zombie-like enemies, grave yards, that sort of thing. I remember that when enemies died, rather than blinking and disappearing, they’d kind of dissolve into mush, which I found delightfully cheesy. I don’t remember who made the game or what year it was released, but based on the general design and feel of the game, I’m going to go out on a limb and assume it was early 90’s, corresponding to the days of Final Fight up through, say, Violent Storm, where all kinds of these “me too” games were made.
Anybody?
