Title: Anyone using Obi with Google Voice? Need opinions
Post by: mcseforsale on May 30, 2013, 05:17:13 pm
So, we ditched the home phone a couple of years back, but we've recently put our cells on no-contract plans with limited minutes.  When we have months with intensive wait times with mortgage companies, or other idiots, we seem to be running thin of minutes....and I'm *NOT* going back to contract celly service.  :soapbox:

So, I'm looking into different solutions to get home phone over interwebs and I was wondering if anyone has some cool solutions.  Basically, I'd like to have one phone on each floor with internet phone service that is free.

My thought was to pick up an Obi box from Amazon and some DECT 6.0 handsets and go through Google Voice.

Any suggestions?

I know when my wife is making those kind of calls, she always just opens up her gmail and turns on that phone call applet on there. Makes those calls with long wait times while facebooking and playing games and doing her computer thing because she is stuck waiting anyway. We don't have a problem with our 700 minute family plan anymore.

Yeah.  The wife likes the idea of having incoming call capability, too.  So, I was thinking using an Obi to route Google Voice (It supports it natively) and hooking that up to a base set on a DECT phone kit.

Hi,

I use an ATA since 2006 and obi is my last one. I'm very happy with it. So much easyer than my Sipuras. Since last year I don't have a regular landline anymore because I transfered my home phone number to VoIP.ms . All is working perfectly, nobody could say there's any difference with a regular landline and it's so cheap. I pay every seconds but at the end of every month it's a big saving. Google voice is configured too but I use it only for calls to USA (I'm in Montreal). I can notice a little delay with it, not a big deal but you have to know that. My wife was scared at the beginning to cancel our regular landline but after 12 months she's totally convinced.

If you have any questions...

Thanks!  That's the kinda info I needed.  So, a couple of questions...do you have it set up for fax?  Also, what handsets are you using?

T wasn't necessary to setup a fax because it's working like a landline. So, you have only to plug your fax and send. I think that the VoIP provider could be a problem if his network is not well configured.
You can use any handset, mine is a Panasonic kx-tg6641.
