Title: Lets see your Black or Blue Balls
Post by: darkSSide on May 21, 2013, 01:12:39 am
Post some pics of black or blue or even clear trackballs using blue led's.I haven't seen too many black trackballs being used and I would like to see/hear some pics/feedback on them. I'm on the fence on which color to get and would like to get some ideas. Thanx!

We've always put illuminated blue 2 1/4" on our tables. But I've just built an upright which we took to Revival here in the UK on the weekend and went for black on that.

It depends on the rest of your panel I think. I went for black as the centre of the cab is black and I wanted to keep it all flowing. I'm going to post some photos of it soon when I get the time.

As for the blue trackball, I think it looks excellent. From my own experience though, I would say that you don't want it glowing bright as you tend to play a lot of games in low-light conditions and it does your eyes in. I went for a resistor value so it was just turning the thing on.

Here's my black one:

Although I'm currently redesigning and rebuilding it so the track ball is actually in the circular part of the design.

Well my control panel will be on the darkside so I'm leaning towards the black ball to match the black sticks and buttons.
Just wondering with that translucent blue ball our even the black ball, do they scuff or scratch easy?

Black anything is going to show up scratches more than anything else, but it's too early to tell with mine yet. Saying that, the balls are super tough and I've not noticed a mark on the blue translucent ball I've had for a few years. Though it doesn't get a massive amount of use. I really wouldn't worry about scratches though.

The reason I ask because when seeing old trackballs from Missile Commands they tend to look faded, granted they are over 30 yrs old. Being on the darker shade that's what worries me but then again looking at old Billiard balls some old 8 balls look good still.

How about a black one which lights up any color you want?

Email me if that sounds interesting to you ;)

Randy always playing with physics......

The ball material isn't faded but rather covered with a film. Glass cleaner for routine cleaning, a polish periodically.
