I'm sure this has been asked 1000s of times before, but I couldn't find anything in the search, so apologies.
What's best to mount the monitor Horizontal or Vertical for a mame upright cabinet?
-
I like horizontal and then force the vertical games to maintain their aspect ratio. You just end up not using about a third of the screen when playing vertical games.
-
Depends on the games you are playing.
-
Build two. One vertical and one horizontal, easy. >:D
-
The correct answer is - YES
Those who focus on the vertical classics or vertical shmups usually mount them vertically.
Those who are more into the 90's fighters usually mount them horizontally.
Not sure why, but horizontal games on a vertical monitor look tiny and awkward to me.
Vertical games on a horizontal monitor don't bother me as much even though technically they are the same size.
Could be that I'm used to horizontal games with 25" monitors, but only 19" monitors on vertical games.
Some don't want to decide, so they rotate: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,108897.0.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,108897.0.html)

Have both in one Cabinet ;D

I tried rotating my monitor before I started building the cabinet to see how games looked both ways. I was shocked at just how much bigger vertical games were on a vertical monitor, even with 4:3 aspect ratio monitor. That's why the only crazy thing I'm taking on for my first cabinet is rigging up a rotating monitor.

32" CRT mounted vertically in a KI2 cab:

plenty of pix in the thread.

It depends on the game. If it is a horizontal game with ~256 pixels or less wide then it can look pretty good on a vertical monitor. Particularly games that don't really matter about keeping the aspect ratio correct. eg Missile Command looks great fullscreen on a vertical monitor.
(I'm talking about arcade monitors).

Rotate. It's easy these days

Like already said, depends on your preference.
My vertical monitor is 27" and I'm fine with horizontals on it also.
I like the build 2 idea also.

I had a horizontal lcd cab basically finished. Then I came up with the crazy idea to make it vertical with a 27" crt. Now im working on a new horizontal for arcade and console games. Vertical games look amazing on it. If you have the means, build both!
