Title: Hmmmmm
Post by: CoryBee on May 18, 2013, 05:46:19 pm
I love most of the shows like this that "Brady" has his hand in but as others I was expecting a bit more on the new channel "Computerfile". "Numberfile" is genius, but they could have found a much better cabinet to display MAME on in this youtube channel.

I would even go as far to say it is in -crapmame- territory

If Ben Heck has taught us anything, it's that all the electronics and graphic design background in the world won't keep you from having poor taste.

A arcade cabinet is 50% know-how and 50% artistry.  It's the artistry part that people often fall short on.

WTF?  :laugh2:

He needs to make things right with the world.  You make a monstrosity, then you take it out of its misery.

At least I chopped up, burned and danced around my home made monstrosity.

You know what - it's not that terrible. It looks basically like this man wants to play games first and make it look "pretty" or "authentic" second. And there's some charm to designing it with chalkboard (guessing) material.

And while the button spacing is not something I would do, the control panel is far from "cluttered" and he knew that a 'switchable' stick is a nice compromise to wasting space on a third stick. And the monitor actually fills the bay nicely (albeit a little big - but it doesn't look bad at all.)

Honestly, if it looked dazzling with artwork and design, I'm sure people would just say "eh, he bought the thing at a store and modified it" so I can totally see why they chose this cabinet to feature.

For some reason, I actually kind of like it. :dunno

As opposed to the butcher job done below by so called "veteran retro gamers", the video above by Computerphile is a godsend.

I really hate to bash people for their work as I have little to no cab-worthy woodworking skills myself but stuff like the video below deserves some shaming. Might be time to start a crapmame video thread

No that's totally bashable. I've seen his stuff and this guy should know better. It would have been SUPER EASY to turn that back into a Centipede or at least preserved the cab's construction. But instead they cut it, stick an X-Arcade on there and paint over everything while singing and laughing. Not to mention, the opening of the video shows him using a blowtorch (??).
