Title: Help Arcade Joystick Question & Selection.
Post by: epicfatigue on May 14, 2013, 10:33:37 pm
Hello Everyone,

So as my of you have sen i am building my first mame machine,
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,131026.0.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,131026.0.html)

I am going to be rebuilding my Control panel, now i love the buttons i am using they bring back the memories for me as a kid the clicks there and they feel right!

However i am looking at changing Joysticks, not because i don't like them but because of what i plan to do.
I have no idea what they are, they are genuine and came with my machine and are working flawless and they feel true.

I am looking for some 4-8 way Joysticks, now is it possible to get a restricted plate that would work with what i have?

Because every time i hear about people talking about 4 to 8 ways they seem to say the 8 way is not fantastic and they are more of a 4 way joystick.

I am planning to build a automatic 4 to 8 way joystick to go with my rotating monitor.

Can i have everyone's thoughts and experiences with Joysticks?

Majority of games i play are 8 way, but i struggle to play the 4 way games because when it hits both micro switches nothing happens.

Please Note i am removing 2 buttons and the wiring will be changing, this was a test and like all good things many tests are required to achieve what you want!

For an automatic 4 way and 8 way stick try the servostik from ultimarc

Ultimarc Servostik (http://www.ultimarc.com/servostik.html)

Are you asking if the mentioned joystick will install on your current joystick mount/bracket? Because I'm curious of that as well.

The Servostik (http://www.ultimarc.com/servostik.html) consists of the stick and motor.

You will also need one control board per two sticks.

The Mag-Stik Plus (http://www.ultimarc.com/controls.html) is a completely different product that you can manually switch between 4- and 8-way operation by lifting and turning the joystick handle.

Your existing sticks there are happ competitions.

Both the servo stick and the mag plus have the same mounting bolt pattern so they should be an easy replacement.

The above mentioned sticks are what I would call the American standard mount where a stick like the Sanwa JLF, seimitsu or Zippyy would be a smaller mount.

You can also check out the omni2 from GGG. It's based on a Sanwa JLW with a nub you can turn from underneath to change from 8 to 4 way.

There is no add on for your existing sticks that would convert them to 4 way

That panel is packed pretty dense so I'm not sure how well the servo stick will fit due to the servo on the side.

AH i feel like an idiot i thought that that was just for the motor and housing for the price its very acceptable then, and i will just go with these joysticks.

Has anyone used the j-stick ( i believe thats what they are (Servorstick))
How do they compare to the Happ competitions ? because i love these sticks.

Thanks all.

ps i plan on building a new control panel the current one is hurting my hand.

They're gonna feel different than comps.  more of a square feel

hrm,

see its been so long since i was in the arcades (15 years ago)

and when  i used the ones on my arcade at the moment they felt like i remembered.

Will it be the same with these?

Were these J-sticks common?

Forgive my lack of arcade knowledge i just knew what i liked back then and knew the machines.

I think Le Chuck was wanting retro-fit Happ-type sticks with the Servo-stick assembly.

Nope. Not that I recall at least. I stick to the Omni2 Robo for my auto switching
