Title pretty much says it. I see that everybody here is pretty much obsessed with bondo, but that seems kinda like overkill just for screw holes and hairline cracks. Has anyone ever tried drywall mud? It's super easy to apply, sands and takes paint extremely well, and is just very easy to work with. Any reason why this wouldn't work?

I have found that it doesn't stand up to the same abuse that bondo does. I want my plugs to be as hard as the wood around it. For little stuff it'll serve well enough but for a whole project I don't like it. I've found that some wood putty and spackles don't feather as well as bondo and occasionally I'll notice a minute color change in the paint which drives me crazy. Sounds like your mileage varied tho so carry on.

Thanks LeChuck. I haven't done it yet, I was just gonna see if somebody had tried it and what it came out like. I'll probably end up using bondo, but I really didn't wanna go through the trouble unless I absolutely had to.

Drywall mud definitely would not hold up. Bondo is king and easy enough but it will stink a bit while curing.

Bondo, big time. Just make sure you use eye/mouth protection when sanding.

+1 for bondo. I used wood filler once and the area that was filled stood out no matter what I did.
Even overfilling the hole and feathering it out still resulted in that area having a slightly different texture despite multiple coats of paint.

Wood filler also has the tendency to shrink over time so 2 or 3 years later the holes that you have filled stand out like a sore thumb.

+1 on bondo. Plus... It cures within minutes!
