Title: I messed up.....Trackball issue - Need axis rotate 90 degrees
Post by: CoryBee on May 09, 2013, 07:35:15 pm
Like title says

When I routed out the space for the trackball on one of the builds I had the trackball rotated incorrectly. I searched all around the forums and found similar posts but they were not the same trackball and it is a PS\2 one and I don't think I can just switch wires up...or can I?

It is one of these

(http://i.ebayimg.com/t/LED-2-1-4-Trackball-MAME-PS2-Arcade-Pc-Not-HAPP-/00/s/NjY2WDUwMA==/$(KGrHqV,!nME8V(58tVSBPHinc4bJw~~60_3.JPG)

For clarification, when I move left and right the mouse moves up and down, etc.

I know of the issue of rotating it will be a different spin, the games being played with it wont really matter though so now worries.

I guess what I am asking is a software way of rotating the axis, I can't seem to do it in Mame32p or anywhere else.

Thanks in advance.

Hey, Cory.

At first, I thought you were trying to fix a Marble Madness trackball. (they were mounted 45 degrees turned IIRC)

To fix the 90 degree problem you describe, what's keeping you from re-mounting it in the correct orientation?

I thought those Sparkfun/Paradise TB mount holes were in a square layout.   :dunno

Yea sorry, 90 is what I meant.

They are almost a perfect square but the clips that hold it together on the sides are a smidgen to big when rotated. The space I routed is too small when turned to the side. I would have to route out more space, and art, wring, tmolding etc is all in place.

Is it close enough to where you can pull the TB and grind down the clips?

Degenatrons mounted one of these without a top half here (http://kadevice.tk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=398), so you might be able to get away with just grinding the clip (by the screwdriver tip), even if the the two halves don't stay together when you remove the mounting screws.

The way I have it mounted it will have to have the clips holding the thing together.

Are there no software solutions boss man?

Thanks for the effort as always PL1

If it's only running MAME, you can remap the axis in MAME (TAB while in a game>Input(General)>P1 controls>track x).
It will still be screwy in windows, but the MAME games will work fine.

If BadMouth's idea isn't going to work for your setup/emulators, looks like it's time to break out the dremel (router bits or cutoff wheel+chisel) and shop-vac.

You can probably contain most of the dust using tape and plastic bags/sheeting.

Only need it in MAME but I have tried messing with settings, it only allows for reversing the axis not switching them.

Mame Menu - Input (General) - Player 1

1. Clear the Track X Analog, Track X Analog Inc and Track X Analog Dec (highlight the input, press enter, press escape)

2. Assign input to Track X Analog (press enter then move trackball the desired direction)  Leave the Inc and Dec as "none" unless you plan on using a joystick to play a trackball game.  :dizzy:

3. Repeat 1 and 2 for Y axis.

4. Repeat 1-3 for Mouse inputs.

5. Repeat 1-4 in Player 2 menu.

EDIT: Forgot that you'd need to edit for all games.   :banghead:

Currently running v .146

Looks like the same menus are used for v .106, but I didn't realize you were running a version that was that old.   :o

Not sure when the menus were changed.

ANyways, I couldnt find a software fix so I just flipped it around and used plastic cement stuff I found at the hardware store. He was really wanting the Arcade done tonight. Updated 4-Player thread with pictures.

All the cool kids include 9 year old versions of mame in their sales. .105 still has old menus.

How are you mounting it that you can't just grind those latches off.

Mounted it with small carriage bolts. So it is held in by the top plate then the assembly\base snaps into that.
