SINCE IT'S A HOLIDAY WEEKEND HERE IN THE U.S., WE'RE GOING TO EXTEND THIS COMPETITION THROUGH MONDAY, MAY 27TH!!!
Competition Rules:
- Use any car or transmission option available in the game.
- Fastest total time wins. Winner picks the next game and track.
- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.
- A screenshot or photo of your time displayed on the game screen is required to
enter. Video is great and would help others learn, but it isn't required.
- Everyone is encouraged to post their times even if faster times have already
been submitted. It's fun to compete with people of the same skill level even if a
master of driving has already submitted an untouchable time.
- Please make sure your times are from games that take place during the
competition period (no posting your best time from last year, etc.).
- Use of scripts or other non-standard hacks are not allowed.
No program or other person or entity of any sort may manipulate your
controls during your game. Coaching & back-seat driving is fine as long as the
party doesn't directly influence the game or controls.
- If you can beat any of the times from the previous competitions, you can submit
your time in the LEADERBOARD thread stickied at the top of this forum.
- Have fun!
BYOAC Racing Competition #4 will be Sega Rally Championship - Desert (Practice Mode)
Competition ends at midnight Pacific Standard Time, Sunday May 26th.
emulator - SEGA Model 2 Emulator by ElSemi (either v.9 or v1.0)
rom - srallyc - Sega Rally Championship
settings - default with the exception of country=USA

I'll share afterwards! But there is a fastest line round there and that corner is the difference between 1-1.5 seconds.

I want to jump into these competitions but stupid life keeps getting in the way. My driving cabinet has only been fired up once in probably 3-4 weeks now :(.

Common Peeps - get a time posted.....

OK I never really got into Sega Rally that much so this is a dumb question....can you beat the game and be really good at it *WITHOUT* touching the brake at all? Or does being fast require *some* bit of brake finesse?

gotta wait till this weekend, I work too much.

Im not great at this game, but I do in fact use the brakes. I will not be winning this competition, but I will have fun losing it.

When he says "medium", I jam it in 3rd gear to slow down and back to 4th as I exit. I don't let off the gas at all for easy turns.
I don't remember there being any "hard" turns on the beginner track, but that is the only time I use the brake.
I don't know if I'm any good. I can easily get first place on the desert every time, but I've only finished the championship once or twice before time ran out.
I'll get some play time in and post a time tomorrow.
Is it possible to swap the wiring between the potentiometers on your brake and clutch or is the brake some kind of pressure sensor?

Thanks for the reply and explanation. The question regarding the brakes was one I was meaning to ask a while ago, *before* I got PPJOY and my virtual brake working with Model 2 emu. So it's all good now I have it working great but was still curious nonetheless.
About swapping the wires between the potentiometers on my brake and clutch, that is out of the question, since yes indeed my brake has a pressure sensor on it called a "Load Cell", which measures the amount of force you apply to the pedal. These are ones I have.

Sheesh man, I wouldn't want you to go overboard with your hardware or anything. ;)
I like that overhead design though. I'm going to do my pedals like a car (note I didn't say race car) so I want to mount the brake and clutch overhead. I think I've got most of that stuff lying around in my junk pile believe it or not. I always seem to have mountains of scrap metal and old car parts.... must be a hillbilly thing. ;)
You might want to pull out a multi-meter and see what kind of data the load cell is sending back to the pcb.... you'd be surprised, sometimes it just acts like a pot. Almost any kind of computer sensor just sends variable resistance by the time it plugs into the pc... it just makes programming easier.

My buddy's Porsche 911 (non turbo :( ) has the pedals coming out of the floorboard, its pretty great for heal toe shifting /drifting / turning . Super fun to drive.
-
I drive a Datsun and its only got two pedals :(

Thanks Howard. Yeah these pedals are from CST and go for top dollar used(ie around $1000) at the iracing forums. The maker of them, Todd Cannon, has gone missing and he still owes pedals to over 50 paid customers!! You wouldn't BELIEVE the drama going on over there dude. They say if they see Todd anywhere they're gonna beat the living ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- out of him. I wouldn't blame them, I'm just glad I got them at the time when he was doing honest business and was still fullfilling orders.
Anyway, good luck with your pedals. Do keep us posted on how they turn out. If you get too lazy and decide you don't wanna build them yourself, there's a few other promising pedals coming out on the market soon. MPP is one to watch out for.

The reason I love arcade racers over these new realistic racer is because I think brakes are overrated. Gas pedal to the floor! So no, I didnt use the brakes. I did downshift tho. the desert track has like two turns to worry about and that's it.
-
I agree.... the only thing the brake is good for is for doing a sweet slide across the finish line..... brakes.... bah!

Cool cool!
Anyways top THIS IF YOU DARE!!!!!!!!!!

COuld you outline how you have implemented sweet fx please? Love your CRT look.
-
Thanks. Just check the outrun thread. I made a detailed post about it in there. Basically just extract all the sweetfx files into whatever game your using and open the settings.txt file to play with whatever settings you like.
-
Nice - thanks - good contribution

Not enough to win, but here is my first entry.
I notice that the car slows down A LOT when you get sideways.
That's the big problem with the last turn. I'm still working out how to avoid being sideways for too long on it.
Time to do some research. ;D
-
I'm not finding videos of fast runs on the arcade game, but on the PC and Saturn versions people move over to the grass as soon as they get to the sandy area before the last turn. Then when they get close to the apex, they cut across the sand to the inside edge.

Funny, I was on youtube earlier looking for examples and saw that they recommend the grass as well but, when I did a few runs tonight, i keep doing worse than before. Ill try again another day.

here's a very detailed faq i wrote a long time ago.

my times weren't that great though..

The Saturn played a lot faster than the arcade, but not surprising at 1/2 the resolution!

usually Id be happy someone was editing instead posting multiple times, but its hard to see how much you've improved with only 1 time shown.

One more day to get a time posted. :)

Assuming I bagged this one.
BadMouth - could you change my forum name from vtivti to MartinJames please.
Could you add my time to the leaderboard.
Please may we have Daytona USA 93 ROM - Advanced - Fastest single lap. Same rules as before re save states with one addition. The winner must post a video achieving a time within 107% after they win, or the winning video.
I shall post my Sega Rally video later tonight together with how I do it.
-

I haven't taken the time to review the times, but probably so.
BadMouth - could you change my forum name from vtivti to MartinJames please.
I don't have the power to do that. Saint owns the forum and probably can. http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=profile;u=167 (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=profile;u=167)
There used to be an option to have a name other than your username show up in the forums, but I can't seem to find it.
My powers are limited to editing posts in the driving cab forum.

I will check out the game and get a new thread posted tonight. We probably won't do fastest single lap though. I think it would just add too many subcategories for each game. I'm open to discussion if anyone wants to weigh in.
Also won't require a video for several reasons. I want to keep the rules consistent and no other competition has required a video.
Not everyone is set up to record their games and we usually only have a half dozen (if that) participating already.
I think it's great if someone posts a video so others can learn from them, but it's not going to be required.

down to the wire.

I wasnt recording but, I did take out the camera for the following lap which gave me my second fastest time of 2:44:18. I blame my brother on distracting me on the last lap.

Its a day late for closing but Great time. I'll have to have a go at that one later today.

vtivti wins the competition and chooses the next game, but repost your time in the Leaderboard thread stickied at the top of the forum and you'll be listed as having the fastest time. ;)
You can always submit a faster time for any track that has already had a competition. (just not the ones we haven't got to yet)
vtivti, sorry I didn't get a chance to set up the next competition thread last night.
I might not get to it tonight either, but we will do Daytona '93 next.
-
Ha, I lost track of time. I thought yesterday was Monday. :dizzy:
I look forward to Daytona.

I have it ready to post, but I'm curious as to why you picked Daytona USA 93 instead of the original?

Bug fixes, if you wish to use the original - feel free. makes no real difference. Just no ---gosh-darn--- Turbo edition!
-
Daytona USA 93 edition good choice, because the original you put in multiplayer mode and slows your opponent you will get around 14 - 15 seconds by turns ;)
