Title: tweaking vector settings to make the vector games look more like vector games
Post by: happyfunball on April 25, 2013, 09:06:24 am
I've been polishing up my mame install lately after laboriously upgrading all the roms, chd's etc, hlsl and all that, and I know there is a way to make the vector games look better, but I've done some searching on google and here on the forums and most of the threads appear to be old enough that they changed the ini files in the meantime.
when I look at the vector settings for the latest version of mame, it just has 3 or 4.

did I miss something somewhere or has anyone done this recently that can post settings they are satisfied with?

wow, nobody has messed with this or has any comment to make at all?

I thought for sure somebody would.

I got my vector games looking good. I will check my setting when I get home and let you know, but I will say I only use like 2 or 3 settings @ most .

Are HLSL effects for vector out yet?  Thought that was still in development...

Minimal tweaks on my side - and my cab is a 'vector' cab to begin with that I MAME'd (Omega Race).  :)  I think just tick the line thickness up a notch or two.  The flicker settings are a bit too aggressive to me  (i.e., too much and fake looking...but I haven't seen a real vector game in AWHILE...so who knows) so I leave them off.

I believe there used to be a way to set the resolution of the vector rasterization, but I don't know that there's a setting for that, now.  If so, adjusting that to match whatever your monitor supports would probably dramatically increase the vector quality.

I use the following and it looked great but I am going to Funspot in New Hampshire in June so I will compare it against the original then. I tried turning on antialias and it put a weird line is certain spots of the game.
#
# CORE VECTOR OPTIONS
#
antialias                0
beam                    1.3
flicker                   0
gamma                 2
contrast                2

That might be in SDLMAME. Display resolution can still be set, but I think to get the old results (for example, running at 640x480 without artifacts) you have to run DD. I think the vector shader stuff is still semi-beta.

maybe they added stuff and pulled it? I googled around and couldn't really find anything much later than 2009, then almost nothing, and the settings in the ini aren't what they described.

interesting.. i added this in and it hosed all the colors in the raster games. had to nuke the ini file and start fresh. tested it and it did the samething in the new ini file..

looks like the palletes got shifted.

Look round MAMEWorld. Look under mooglyguy. Ask about it even, if no one's talked about it in a while.

i go into default game options and increase the beam width, flicker, and intensity.

Pretty decent method for older MAME, but doesn't really work well with the newer rendering system. I played a lot with it years ago, and the best I came up with was increasing the contrast a little.
