Title: Game that originally had one joystick/ buttons for 2 players on 2P panel?
Post by: marioxb on April 24, 2013, 10:16:59 am
Sorry if this has been covered before, I didn't know exactly what to search for in this case.

My question is this:

A lot of classic 2-player alternating games (Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, etc) had each player shared a joystick and/ or buttons. I really don't want to have a one joystick cab and I was just wondering what everyone's opinion was to play these games on a standard 2 player cabinet that has a set of controls for each player?:

1. Have Player 2 move over to the left controls when it's his turn?

2. Map actions to both sets of controls?

Both one and two have advantages and disadvantages and are confusing to those not "in the know".

I was hoping there was some sort of trickery that could be done? Maybe some form of cocktail mode that does not flip the screen?

well, alot of the classic games that had both players share a single joystick used a 4way stick.  So i would install a dedicated 4way for those type of games.   If you don't wish to do that, i personally think you are better off just using the left stick and taking turns.  You can remap mame to have both sticks functional, but then there is nothing from stopping player 2 from grabbing the second joystick and messing up your game while you are playing.
