Title: unnamed HaRuMaN Weecade kit cabinet (tons of pictures 04/22/2013)
Post by: Malenko on April 22, 2013, 08:37:20 pm
so I got tired of walking to my basement to play the Dreamcast arcade machine, and I know I could have just hooked up the DC to my big screen and played with a controller, but I LOVED the DC in a cab, but my fiancee was already gracious enough to let me put a Galaga in my living room, so I didn't wanna push my luck :)

Total Current build time, from unboxing to playing a game was just over 4 hours, and 3 hours and 45 minutes of that was waiting for the glue to dry.

Here is where you can order a kit from Haruman (if ordering is open):

This build also features DC controller hacks also done by Haruman.

Last plug, this build also features a Mini Scan Line Generator from Crafty Mech:

Here it is in pieces:

Dry fit:

Bottom Glued in:

Top glued on at the same time, top batons clamped, weight was put on the bottom batons, but honestly, it was a tight fit and probably not needed.

While that was drying, I mounted the monitor to the monitor mount board. I glued the side wood on this way because the 20" monitor wouldn't let it clear the sides. I ended up nocking the small pieces of wood back off and using shelf brackets.

Control Panel populated but not wired (yet)

Initially wired up, yup I soldered some connectors on, get over it :)

Cleaned up the wiring a bit:

I LOVE me some Mars Matrix:

This is how everything fits. I need to figure out how Im going to do the power outlet.probably through the bottom, because I dont like the power out the back door on Bonnie's Pink Box.

Last pic with no SLG followed up by SLG hooked up. Tough to really appreciate the effect, mostly because iPhone 4S cameras suck donkey dick, then I resized it down to 25% of original size using MS Paint.

This is a *little* better:

My future step father* started playing Mars Matrix without asking, it was HILAROUS, and honestly he's pretty good!

These are really just pictures I was taking for HaRuMaN so he can see the scanline effects:

*actually its father in law, but I was making a subtle "red headed stepchild" joke that NO ONE was picking up on :/

I haven't really looked into setting up a dreamcast in a cab - do you have to change discs when you want to play a different game, or is there a means of "flashing" the system to allow it to play from a list of ISOs or something?  Is it just like playing a dreamcast outside of a cab as far as the interface is concerned?

In a nutshell, if I were to walk up to this unit and switch it on, would I be able to tell that it was housing a dreamcast?

^You still have to change discs for Dreamcast games, unless it's a burned compilation disc. Obviously the emulators can play many games without a swap.

Yeah, the beep from the controller with the VMUs in it and the dreamcast splash screen are pretty big give aways. There are ways to make a dreamcast boot things from an SD card, but I dont mind opening the back door and swapping games.  I started playing Soul Calibur and havent swapped that out for a while. Im probably going to delete my old MvC2 save and get all the characters again n stuff. Mars Matrix is amazeballs. The Genesis emulator is surprisingly good, but I havent found a bootable SNES emu yet.
