What are those 40 pin and 44 pin IDE/PATA connectors called? I'm trying to see if I can find some of those bare connectors on Digikey or Mouser or anywhere so I can make my own cables.
Or someone can help me find a suitably looooooooong (longer than 3") 44 pin connector cable. :)

They're conventionally referred to generically as IDC (Insulation Displacement Connector). The pitch is 0.1" (2.54mm) in both directions. The special version with every other position grounded for 80 conductor ATA cables is special/application specific and you can probably find it as an "ATA connector".
They're available from several vendors. Check 3M, TE/AMP, Molex, FCI, etc.
The laptop version is 2mm pitch.
