Title: Is AC line filter need for mame?
Post by: menace on November 10, 2003, 07:56:49 am
I have one installed but since it filters EMI that might interfere with game boards, is this necessary for a mame setup?  just curious.

I didn't use one on any of the cabs I built but I used a computer monitor.

If you are using an arcade monitor I don't know but MAME cabs are mostly over the counter consumer electronics that work fine off of household AC.

No.. you don't...

The reason I say this with certainty is because I hacked apart about 5 power supplies from PC's by now, and in all of them, there was an AC line filter!

You know the part where the cable plugs into on the AC of the PC? The inside of that plug has an integrated AC filter.  You can see it if you open your PC and look inside the power supply.. it's a silver "box"..

So that protects the computer.. as for the rest of the components, if you have a good power bar in your MAME machine, it too will have a very good filter..

Mine filters all 3 lines (live, neutral and ground!)

So save your $$$ and get a good power bar instead to protect things like the monitor and computer speakers.   :)
