I'm using Mame .148. I would like to have Mame do the following:
1. No nag screens or other annoying mame messages
2. Use a highscore diff file instead of the save states
Can someone point me to instructions or tell me how to accomplish these things? I'm assuming I need to compile a version of Mame, but all I know how to do is download the source. After doing some research, it seems there are DIFF files out there and compilers to help with what I want to do but I don't have a clue where to start.

It's not that hard...

Trying to do this for .148 using the instructions found here: http://headsoft.com.au/index.php?category=mame&page=mc64 (http://headsoft.com.au/index.php?category=mame&page=mc64)
Having an issue with step 5 and 7.
Step 5: Download the mame0147s.zip from here and extract to C:\MinGW\source\Mame0147u3
Step 7: Download MameUI source from here extract somewhere then copy the src folder to C:\MinGW\source\Mame0147u3
When I copy MameUI source to the destination folder, it asks me if I want to overwrite the existing files there. The instructions don't say if you should or shouldn't, so I'm unsure if I should proceed before a re-write or not.

leapinlew,
If you are trying to compile mameUI then yes overwrite the files. If I remember right it is only a few folders that are different.
\source\Mame0147u3\src\osd\winui
Make sure you have updated the compiler and MinGW that is no longer included.
If you are trying to compile standard mame with the hiscore and no nag, ignore the mameui parts and do not include them at all.
Great thread here

He wants mameui for the ui features in diddling with things....and I think because he's used to it.
By the way, lew, UIFX still supports hiscore, and has a load time far less than old UI.
